The rollers in the chain seem nice and oily but the side plates have gone all rusty and brown! Is this normal?
It seems to be the same for me. but i don't think it s a pb. i don't think side plates need to be vry oiled. futhemore, when your roller are oiled, i think that "cappilarity" (not sure of my translation!) make the side plates oiled where they get in touch.

And, reading this subject up, with the oil distributor not touching anything , chain is in good condition 22000miles later...

Yea, sideplates go rusty when you wash the bike, and in the rain of course! Scottoiler oil is supposed to lubricate 'inside' the links, to stop tight-spots and keep it moving nicely.

If you want to keep the sideplates shiny, spray em with 'normal' chain lube, which you can use to cover the bits the Scott can't reach :wink:
