So I've owned the bike for just over 2 weeks... In that time I've had 3 days of riding, and 13 days of ripping it to bits and rebuilding it! Good job I love it already....
got to hope the rest of your ownership has better "Riding vs Garage" ratio.

But I am impressed with you spirit to get it fixed and understood.

well done for spotting your mistake - easily done

a tip for the future in case you take it apart again, no need to drop the coolant, just unbolt the rad & let it drop down - gives plenty of access to see the front cam marks.
and put a roll of cardboard inside the big timing plug hole so you don't damage the threads in the casing when you're turning your 17mm socket, otherwise the plug will be a pig to get out next time!
to make it easier to see the marks, i put some tippex on the flywheel and went over the marks in black biro - much clearer.

i personally find the rear exhaust cam most awkward cos the mark is hidden partly behind the frame, whereas the front marks are facing you.

i'd guess if the gears were moving when you put the cct in, you weren't pulling the non-tensioner side tight to take up the slack.
the slack should be on the tensioner side, otherwise when you set the tension, the gears move, as you saw!

now you've got the nack of taking the tank off you've always got something to do when it's raining - what's next? dyno kit? cams? gas flow? pistons? :biggrin
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Cheers - I'm hoping for the same!

I enjoy taking things apart for the hell of it - Seeing as it has done 36k miles, with a few owners in the last year I felt it'd be prudent to get stuck in to make sure I hadn't bought a total lemon!!

Yep - That's what was happening! Just took me a few attempts to work it out, then figure out how to keep the gears steady... :whatever

Haha... next is new tyres! .....Then spacers for the rear footpegs to go on over the pipes, then perhaps some kind of homemade 'ventura' style rack, the baffle in the right exhaust is stuck, so it'll need some gentle persuasion.. There'll always be something!! Hoping to get it on a dyno in the next month or so to get a pro's view on whether it's running right or not.

While the sun's out though, I will mainly be visiting petrol stations.
