Storm not charging properly

Post by bandsawman »

Hi, I'm having some woes with my storm :(
Occasionally, I turn the engine off then when I try to restart it the battery's dead. A jump start from a car battery gets it running again, and it'll run all day.
If I keep it running and check the voltage, I find that it's low - around 8 or 9 volts. The volts do rise with an increase in engine revs though but only by a volt or so.
If I charge the battery overnight and then run it, the voltage is ok - 13.8 volts, increasing with engine revs. It'll be fine for a couple of weeks then it'll fail again.
I've replaced the battery and also the regulator/rectifier, but it's still doing it.
Can anyone please help?

was the new reg rec a good one or did you somehow manage to buy a dead one?
could possibly be a faulty stator - that's what it was on my 750, drove me mad.
turned out one of 3 stator coils had dodgy insulation and was earthing.

either that or there's a dodgy wire somewhere, or the battery is fooked - i got through 3 batteries before i found the fault on the 750.

My guess is the alternator check the output if it's low clean all the connections if it's still low it's fooked.
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

It's certainly starting to look like the alternator.

Over the last couple of days I've been monitoring the caharging - with the engine running the voltage is around 13.8v, revving it brings it up to 14.5v.
But I've just checked it again now and it was sitting at 13v - even when revving it. Turned the lights on and their brightness didn't change when revving it.
Kept it running for a bit and eventually the voltage would rise slightly on revving.

So now I need to get a replacement - where from, and which one...
I'll search the forum for previous posts.

I've measured the resistance between each winding on the stator and earth, and it's only 0.7 ohms...
Looks like it's definitely the stator then.

The Haynes manual states the resistance between each yellow wire (winding) should be within 0.2 - 0.5 ohms. Did you get the same reading when measuring all three wires :?: Before you go shelling out for another stator check the yellow wires going to the windings, make sure they are in good condition first. If your stator is breaking down you'll probably get a worse reading when it's hot.

Also make sure the connections (as storminateacup says) are good on the end of the yellow wires and are a good fit to the rectifier, also check the other two wires for the same thing.

There's also a separate earth wire that goes under one of the rectifier bolts, check that is fitted and not left off by someone.

if you don't have a tester, the best way to check if the stator is fooked is to connect the 3 wires to the terminals of a 13A plug and plug it in.

if nothing happens it's defective.
if it goes bang it's a good one.

Just ordered a replacement stator from BB Bikeshop online, 68 quid delivered - I'm happy with that!

I'll post an update when I've received and fitted it :)

When I measured the resistance between each yellow wire and earth it was only reading 0.5 ohms. Fooked.

New stator arrived pretty quickly, I've fitted it, and all seems ok up to now.

When I took the old one out the damage could be seen very clearly - burnt out.
