SP1 not charging

Post by cunningstunt »

My mate at work has an SP1 that doesn't hold charge. He's replaced the battery and rectifier but still not charging and sounds like it's only running on 1 pot. Today he has tested the 3 wires going to the rectifier and it's not putting any charge in so he's thinking the stator is shot. He can only find main dealer ones at £290 so does anyone know what may be wrong with it before he shells out shed loads of cash or anyone that does pattern stators or has anyone got a second hand one they want to sell?

for a fraction of the 290 i'd be tempted to take it to a local motor rewind place and get them to rewind it.
give these guys a ring - http://www.e-r-s.co.uk/contact.htm

if they can't help (and i'm sure they can) there's a few others local to you

not a big job i shouldn't imagine, it's only 3 coils of copper wire with one end of each coil commoned up

is it not the same as a firestorm stator? as in can you not get a cheap one off fleabay?
also, from what you say, can you check if one ignition coil is grounding>?
i'd be tempted to unplug everything first before condemning the stator - might be sumat dodgy draining the power.

look in the workshop manual for the testing procedure for the stator - there's a link to carlsalter.com & hondamoto free manuals in the workshop forum

I'll print this off and give it to him tomorrow and tell him to join the forum so he can ask himself! Thanks for the input. I've managed to find a company that does a pattern alternator for it for £56 delivered but not sure if that's what he'll need. I know he has had the charging system checked out and it's not putting any charge into the regulator end of things so i'll pass on the info and let him play.

This is the site i found the G14 alternator on and looking at the fitting listings the SP1 is the same as the Firestorm
http://www.bbbikeshop.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh0 ... 3a875#a875 and luck might be on his side as 1 has been listed on ebay for £29!

Quick update: SP1 stator is shot so new one has been ordered from BB online shop for under £75 new inc delivery. Not sure if they are any good but not my bike or wallet! He ordered product G14 and it says the SP1 is the same as the normal firestorm ones so i hope after showing him the site it actually fits!
