Winter Plans

Post by mattster »

Howdy folks,

I know it's only September, but I'm already planning my bikes winter break in the garage....

Plans so far:

Accessory socket (phone charger)
Fit an Acumen DGV (still to buy..)
Balance Carbs
Brake Calipers Stripped/Cleaned/New seals
Paint/Powdercoat wheels
Paint/Powdercoat fork lowers

Question - What colour should I do the wheels?

It's red with the small silver bellypan at present... Should I do the wheels silver to match the frame? Or red to match the fairing? Or.... gold?? :whatever

As the geordie man on Big Brother used to say - 'You decide.....'

1 to 4 are on my list too! (I have the Acumen DGi in stock...)
Modify the spare bellypan, and bespoke it a bit...
Fireblade brace onto the swingarm and powdercoat
Make a toe guard/sharks fin - with some custom brackets for my chain oiler
Fit Tutuoro Chain Oiler to my Sharks Fin
Fit flushmount side indicators and flush some into the front inlets
Rear shock spacer (3mm) to fit
Fit frame mounted Steering damper - shameless bling
Link pipe mod (cut overlaps out where pipes join...

New clip-ons, slightly flatter (I think CBR ones)
I'd like to go -1t on front sprocket and fit a speedo healer
Buy and fit an ignition advancer

Wheels - personally, I'd go black/gunmetal..... (like mine)

I guess I have more ideas, and pending projects than I do time...

Got my paint already & a powder coater lined up to sandblast (not shotblast) & powder the frame, subframe wheels etc - owes me a favour!
depending on £ and a few technical issues might pop some hc pistons in while the engine is out, and upgrade the clutch (which strangely has been behaving itself the last 100 mile or so???)

plan is, get tyres on the cbx, mot is due in november on that one, then ive got sumat to ride while the storm is in bits then theres no rush getting it how i want it.
was all a bit hurried when i rebuilt it after my off, otherwise id have missed all the fun, but it is a bit hashed to say the least, bodywork wise.

see how we go in spring... i'll be keeping the storm but possible going for a blade or tuono instead of the 750.

My plan is dull.

Ride it until the roads are gritted. Then ACF50 it. Keep riding it. Keep spraying it. Repeat until Spring. Then look around for a new bike, and if I see one I fancy, sell the VTR.

I was at a track day yesterday. Hired a cbr6. It was awesome and blew my vtr into the weeds, I'm sad to say.

There was a VTR there - in the fast group being ridden well until a crash. Not sure if he is a member of the forum. Looked like a painful off to me

Get the Acumen digi gear indicator with the voltage display built in. Only a few pounds extra and stops the worry over reg/recs.
Or for very little extra, a Vapor display, with everything built in......shaving those grams

Don't much care what mine looks like, so putting all my energies into engine and dyno time.
Not to mention half the housekeeping!

Suppose once I get the motor done I might want to have a look at plastics.

Which leads me to thinking....is there anyone out there who might want to swap some plastic repair and spraying in exchange for my engine rebuild work? I can sort a lunched CCT pretty easily, or whatever.
But although I have a spray gun I can't be bothered with all the flatting and lacquering and coats of many coats, etc.

I'm sure a cash either way arrangement would sort out parts or paint costs in either direction.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I have a red storm too and was wondering what to do with the wheels also. I had a wee play with some gold paint the other week on the front wheel and fork lowers. Not a pro job as I wanted to see what the gold looked like. Well to cut a long story short ....... I love it and im gonna get the wheels powder coated gold this winter.

my works is moving premises in a few weeks... better bigger workshop space, shotblast bay, and a proper spraybooth :biggrin
why dont you go for a nice lightweight fibreglass fairing tony? im sure it'll make a big difference on the strip?
nice r1 single seat unit & ditch the heavy storm tail fairing & seat base.... all adds up

*dont forget if you powder coat the wheels etc you will need to replace the bearings or they wont last 5 mins!
also, anything with a thread in it, screw a bolt in cos the shotblast & coating will wreck the threads.

Yeah, see where you're going, but if i was bothering to change it would have to be carbon, preferably unpainted. What do all the BSB and WSB teams do with those lovely unpainted test mule bodyworks?

interesting thought.... i'll ask my tyre man.
also a lot of track riders buy a new bike, take off the stock fairing and store it, put on a track fairing and the other is gathering dust... usually until they sell the bike as a minter lol :biggrin
lad i know got a brand new sp1 fairing for 130 off a track rider who had done just that.

big weight savings to be had i'd imagine.

hummm, winter plans...The forks defo need doing. Daves bellypan is getting the treatment and normal stuff like replace filters etc and Dave is quite keen to do some of his fairings in a yellow on the black, sort of Ben Spies look..only not as drastic. I'm not sure what Dave has planned, but he has a spray gun etc and I know he's quite keen to do a fair bit to both bikes to have them tip top for next year..We have been thinking of what we want doing to the bikes over winter for a while now. I'm sure whatever he has planned, they'll look good.

There was one thing I was looking at for when they are done, and if only to cover the bloosy bellypan in the stuff to stop the stone chips..I watched a very goos demo at the Durham Bikewise and it was impressive..Have any of you guys ever tried this stuff?

er dunno about that, looks like a clear plastic mouldng & doesnt look like they do them to fit the storm, and doubt theyd do them to fit your belly pan....
you'd be better with some clear transfer stuff i reckon, like they make decals out of.
i meant to ask the guy who did mine cos i want some to protect the bumper on my new car around the boot where i get stuff in & out.... if it's any good i'll let you know

Yes, lets know how you go but they do them for the SP etc and also sell it off the roll. I watched them apply it and saw it in action and it looked good. you couldn't see it when it was on...
