Fuel Tanks

Post by Stratman »

Mine's a '98 with the 16litre tank and after 3 years and 24000 miles I'm really getting fed up with the limited range as I do more distance stuff now. A while ago there were some links to some US sites who made carbon/kevlar 25litre tanks - anybody know of any out there?

Anyone know of a UK manufacturer of aluminium ones like the discontinued Harris ones?

Also, anyone fitted striaght bars and if som, how much fairing trimming needed?

I've got a big carbon tank that I might consider selling.
They cost $1800 new so I would be interested in what you are offering.

$1800!!

Post by Stratman »

I knew they were quite expensive, but didn't realise quite how much! I would have budgeted for between £350 - £450 if I could have found a Harris one, but appreciate this may not be acceptable if it cost $1800 originally.

I'll think about it but was looking closer to £600 to be fair.

Cheaper option
Get a freer flowing filter and get the bike set up to match

The standard filter is like a great big bung and the airbox is too small
Result -bike runs rich and fuel consumption is rubbish

Fitted Pipercross and had it set up (filter £50 setup £80)

Result -lovely smooth pickup, extra 10bhp in midrange and 6bhp at the top, much improved fuel consumption. Bike now does 120 miles to red light and I've had 150+ before it spluttered and died

Chuffed? You betcha

Fitted Pipercross and had it set up
I had it set up with a standard filter - Made it to 140mls with a liter to spare... (I was going easy at 50-60mph due to heavy traffic)

Normally it's a 100mls or so - mixed inner city and dual cariage ways.

The extra HP sounds good through! :)

Nah mate, its a '98 with a 16 litre tank!!
Don't know how Honda measure it though coz I always fill it to the bottom of the filler neck and the most I ever got in it was 15.2 litres and that was after it had run dry!!!! (At 151 miles)

Ben

PS And no that wasn't riding like a nonce, it was a full on Sunday blat (except for the last 10 miles which was going round a 70mph dual carriageway, then downhill 30mph loop -petrol station at the botom of the hill  )

Nah mate, don't panic.
As standard the Storm runs well rich, before I fiddled with mine I used to get RLOD at approx 95 miles, 120 to empty

The improved economy has come since fitting the filter and increase in power since getting it set up properly

Swot I mean! spent a lot on having it set up with K&N filter, with dyno jet kit, its on190 jet needle position 4. Graph says I have a clean 110BHP with no dips really in the curve, why is my mpg so bad? :?

Only difference is I've got a Pipercross filter
Apparently they're a bit harder to set up right and the midrange on mine is slightly down on what it would be with K&N
But the top end is slightly more coz the filter element is the whole of the airbox size, rather than the standard square which the K&N uses

Fuel Consumption

Post by zine »

I have a '98 firestrom and looking at getting the 2001 fuel tank, as it is larger.

Has any one tired different carbs or tired to set up fuel injection on it? (just a thought)

Don't know about cards etc but if you change the tank you will have to put the clip ons off a 2001 bike as well they are hight and less angled.
