Just love the way when you go to the trouble of digging some info out for someone they cant wait to get back on and thank you.

Re: Part Number
theres usually a few on ebay with con rods for £30 ish
what have you done to it???
dont forget you will also need a complete gasket set which is about £100
set of shells about £40
oil, oil fitler, coolant... might be as well looking for a replacement motor tbh if the crank is fkt,
recoup some losses by selling the heads, starter, clutch assy, flywheel, starter gear etc on ebay - all fetch fair prices and usually sell.
you could probably pick up a decent engine for 2-300 and make 2 back in parts.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
Re: Part Number
That price for the crankshaft is probably 50% for carriage- they're bloody heavy!
Yes, I have three or four spare good ones; rods as well if you need those, and pistons/rings.
But you don't need a full gasket set- if you're happy that the pistons and rings are ok you can leave them sitting in the bore and just pop the lower crankcase half off. You can then change the shells without retracting the pistons from the bore, or taking the heads off.
You'll still need the clutch cover gasket, (£13.50) but all the others can be reused as long as they come off cleanly- a touch of gasket silicon will be fine, and as long as the seals haven't been leaking they can be reused as well.
And shims, which you might as well do while the engine's accessible.
Unless you've dropped the bike heavily enough on its side to bend the crankshaft it'll be fine. Although if it's dropped a valve I'd replace the crank as you can't easily tell if it's been slightly bent without specialist equipment.
Mind you, if it's done that then a replacement engine is certainly better cost-wise.
Let me know if you need anything.
Oh, one thought- it's worth IMHO replacing the large caged roller bearing behind the clutch every time cases come apart, as I believe that this bearing is the one which causes graunchy clutches on some bikes.
It's only a tenner or so.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Oldbikeman, sorry to hear your bad news, I hope the prognosis turns out to be good.
It is now 8yrs last november since my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, so I know what you must be going through, But I hope I can also tell you that there is good chances of recovery and you must go forward with that hope. It can be beaten
Good luck

Re: Part Number
Back to original question my friend tells me the cranks available are XL1000 for £80.Apparently regular prices are down to heavy weight shipping and storage cost.So after I while space is more valuable than keeping certain parts in stock.Selling off cheap cost less than shipping back to Japan.Lots of this stuff gets sold on to the public through
specialist venders.
I am not sure of the differences between the VTR/XL cranks or whether it can be modified. If so I will order two and be willing to part with one.
As I intend to be a "Stormer" forever I'll be collecting as I can afford for this wonderful bike.
