HISS and loosing ones keys
I have lost both my honda hiss keys for my 2001 honda VTR1000 Firestorm.
With out any keys honda cannot reprogram a new key!?
How genius of them
Anyone have any ideas on how to get a bike working without forking out for the best part of £400 for a new hiss / key set.

Breaker?
Alternatively, replace the ECU's, ignition key, locks from an older (non HISS) bike- don't know if you'd need to also change the wiring harness, but if you're considering this you can tell by studying the diagrams in the back of the Haynes manual.
Might be cheaper to buy a crash-damaged/wrecked one and strip the bits off that.
You'd end up with a few useful spares, or sell them on to get some of your money back.
On some Hondas with Hiss fitted the key code is on a sticker under the lock, so you might be able to get the code from that.
Don't unbolt the lock, just disconnect and lift off the top yoke.
The lock is held in with security bolts, the heads break off and you'll need new bolts- more expense!
Once you have the code you can get a Honda key set with that code, but you will have to be able to prove ownership of the bike, reg docs etc.
Surely £400 is to replace the whole HISS unit, ECU and two new keys? This can't be for just a new key and re-program.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: HISS and loosing ones keys
Hi thanks for the reply..
So i can get the key made up to the key number, but without a new ecu / ignition / key i am stuffed?
what about an aftermarket ignition unit?
http://www.ignitech.cz/english/aindex.htm
after market one might get round the hiss.. This is really annoying as i was planning on buying a key and getting a spare made just days before loosing the second key
any ideas anyone? Matt x

Re: HISS and loosing ones keys
i would suggest the simplest & cheapest option is find your missing key...
you will kick yourself when you spend all that £££ on getting a new key etc and then your old one turs up somewhere really obvious.
i looked for mine all weekend and then found it in the seat lock!

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Re: HISS and loosing ones keys
Thanks guys, and yes the keys are gone for good.
Motorcycle locksmiths and other options are just way to expensive.
Getting the key made to the lock will get the ignition turning on at least, the hiss will still be active but, after digging about in internet land there are a few options that are cheaper than hondas £400+ route.
the bike is only worth £1500ish.. seems a bloody big waste of money to go down the full cost route.
The aftermarket ignition (programmable) will fix the issue (i hope and get some extra GGs out of the old girl).
IF anyone out there has a firestorm they are breaking with hiss, ecu and ignition / keys i would love to hear from them
Matt : )

Hi from Australia.
It is possible to cut a key and have it coded for your HISS system. One of the guys here had it done for A$90 (60 pounds). Took 30 mins all up. Might be worth ringing around your local locksmiths.

Re: HISS and loosing ones keys
i am in london, can you pm me the details?
Motorcycle locksmiths are not dumb they know how much a replacement is and charge a hansom amount on this model and the ones that didnt charge much were out of area and had to charge extra to come visit!
So if you have the details for this specialist person that would be awesome!!
Also when i get this thing back on the road whos up for coming down the ace and doing a firestorm tea and cake meeting?
And dont worry i have chav repellent !

Mines a 2001(Y reg) and is the newer model with the black top yolk and HISS systemFirestormMike wrote:I don't think that's a HISS kit.
2002 onwards vtr has a black top yoke, and there is no ignition surround. Plus HISS has a big black plastic part on the back of the ignition cover with an extra cable and plug on. Also, the key looks way too small.

Re: HISS and loosing ones keys
sorry didnt look closley enough at it. hers one that is i think going by the size of the key bit more pricey though.

Re: HISS and loosing ones keys
Someone did suggest to me to solve my issue of no keys on a hiss firestorm that i should get the american ignition cdi? that has no hiss system fitted to it... thus solving the issue?
How true is this?! i wonder would be handy if it did work, has anyone done this?
