New valves needed

Post by bandsawman »

Hi all

I know you've heard it all before, but I was going to sort my CCTs - but kept putting it off...... and now I'm paying the price :(

Front CCT failed.
I've got the head off and found that 3 valves are bent. Lucky it wasn't much worse though, eh?

Any idea how much new ones are?

Hi BSM,
I'm sorry too hear of your bikes CCT failure. Others who are thinking about getting theirs sorted let this be a lesson to you.

On the plus side, as you're doing the work yourself it shouldn't be to expensive.

Try http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/ for prices etc, they seem to be about the best in the UK.

As well as the valves you'll also need a head gasket.

Chris.

**EDIT**
I've just had a look at the valve prices. The exhaust valves are £23 each and inlet are £18 each plus the vat and p & p.

You might be better off picking up a good 2nd hand front cylinder head.

I have a good secondhand front head for £70, but can let you have the valves only for £40 if you want.

Sucks, doesn't it, CCT failure.

New cylinder head needed

Post by bandsawman »

Tony.mon, I think this might be the way for me to go as 2 of the valve guides are shot as well.

Does your cylinder head come with the cams? I don't need new ones, but it'll save me having to re-shim.

No, it's already stripped and cleaned.
I'd have suggested re-checking and if necessary re-shimming in situ anyway.

I want the cams for an idea of fitting an engine with all exhaust cams (i.e. using exhaust cams for the inlet positions, with suitable re-timing to give the correct cam lobe centre timing).
It's just a little game I'm playing with my bike to see what tuning mods give what power increases- see my thread "Engine rebuild" in Workshop for the full story.
The exhaust cams have a little bit more lift and duration that the inlet cams, and fit without modification except for slotting the bolt holes in the cam sprockets and re-timing the cam.

Some of your own shims will be in the right range, maybe all, but I'd expect that you'd need to change one or two.

I use a bloke on E-Bay, he does them (9.48 diameter ones, all thicknesses) for about £3 each. Phone or message him first to make sure he has the exact(or nearest equivalent) size in stock first to avoid delays).

When I got my bent valves out I found that 2 valve guides were damaged - when I read up on replacing them I got cold feet... So your offer of this replacement head seems like a much better idea.

A few questions:
1) Is the head complete with valves, seals, springs etc and cam followers?
2) Are all front heads the same (will it definitely fit my '99 bike)?
3) Is there any risk of problems fitting my cams to your head?
4) Any idea how much the postage will be to Manchester?

I won't be back on here till this evening now as I'm on night shifts and need to get to bed...

Seeya later :)

1. yes
2. yes
3.no
4.about a tenner, I would have thought, parcel post, but more if you want next day or courier.

If you want you could arrange courier at your end and just arrange for them to collect from my place or work.

Easy.
