Spark PLugs

Post by bigrich »

Just thought I would pose the question - whilst changing to manual CCT's is it worth doing the spark plugs whilst im at it? if so any recommendations what ones to get?

Anything else worth doing whilst changing over?

I have NGK iridium's fitted, I always check them with every 3000mile service, How long since oil/ air filter change.

Every year about this time she gets a work over as she has been winterised since October.

Oil & filter change.
Air filter check, replace if needed.
Plug check, replace if needed.
Coolant change.
If you have taper head bearings, check and tighten them.
This year its new boot's and resprayed wheels.
Last year was chain and sprokets.

Difficult to say, as it depends very much on how the bike runs and how you treat it; as well as the battery condition, RR regulator actual output voltage (it varies a bit between bikes) etc.

I've had a set in for more than 10,000 miles, without them needing to be regapped.
But I think I'd recommend a new set every year, assuming normal mileage and use.

Trouble is that like many settings, any change or loss of power is small and gradual; you simply don't notice.
But you feel an improvement when you fit new ones or readjust to within recommended settings- carb balance is a classic example.

I have a set of Denso iridium powers ready to go in mine, I've only ever used NGK's before so will report any difference (if I notice any).
They're hard to find, though.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I've had denso's in mine for 2yrs now and haven't had any problems so far,i only change the last ones because of a mis-fire and that was caused by a coil failing not the plugs

everyone has preferances to which plugs to use but i'll certainly be fitting them in the other two stroms i have.

Thanks for the imput Tony, I put a set of NGK iridium last year and to be honest i havn't done a lot of miles since, (ankle problems) your right about not noticing when things want a reset ,I balanced my carbs last week and the difference was remarkable... i do tyres, oil, daily checks, ect but makes me think i should check some things more often. Thanks again ChrisC
