dog?

Post by gafr »

have i bought a pig in a poke?
i"ve only just bought a "99 version, have"nt even picked it up from the shop yet and already i"m being warned about these camchain/tensioner problems.
have i bought a cx in disguise?
anyway, it looks brill and no doubt it"ll go good too, i"m used to big v"s , i"ve had a kwak 1500 v for a while before and i loved the torque of the v configuration.
back to these troubles... do they give you any warning or do they just suddenly go?
does it depend on milage or isn"t that taken into account?
any way to stop this happening in the begining?
or have i just got to be really paranoid knowing that this will happen regardless of what i do?
i"m starting to think that i might have bought a lemon.

You'll be fine

Do the "stopper mod" or get manuals fitted - and jobs a good 'un....

You're right. They are crap. Take it back to the dealer. It will always be letting you down.

Alternatively, read some of the posts and threads on here first.

But I'd take it back if I were you.

Not so fast!
These bikes have two weak points, CCT's and the reg.rec, (oh, and you'd be well advised to strip and grease the shock linkage).

The CCT can be replaced easily with manual ones at a cost of £40 for the pair plus fitting, but why not do it yourself, have a look at the excellent guide in the workshop section.
The Reg/Rec is a weak point on a lot of Hondas, if it goes it will fry the battery most times.
No biggie, and you can fit a later one or adapt an R1 or R6 one for peace of mind.

Although some people will advise you to refit a new pair of standard CCT's they tend to let go without warning, and will mostly take out the front cylinder's exhaust valves, sometimes the inlets as well.
If your'e really unlucky the heads snap off the valves, then it's a spare engine and swap them over.

But once manuals (or the stopper mod, again see the workshop thread on this) has been done, they're bullet proof, fun and friendly.

Plus, this is the best forum on the internet!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Can't help but agree with everything Tony.mon as said. I bought mine spankin' new in 2004 and it has never let me down, not once.... well maybe a flat battery a couple of times but that was sorted with a larger 12Ah unit. Changed the CCTs at 20,000 miles and joined this forum later on. Realised I should have bought the manuals which I have now done and will change in the next few weeks (upto 35,000 miles now). The only thing that has taken the shine off so far is the rider .... but new fairings this year and some meesing about with the suspension should sort that out!

Just realsie I only average 5000miles a year which is a bit pants but she's done Mugelo, Assen, all over the UK and the RBLR1000 .... done me proud she has!

I was being sarcastic btw! My CCTs went at 35,000 miles and the RR at about 40,000. That has been the sum total of my problems in 10 years ownership (save for a split plug cap rubber causing a misfire after washing)

These bikes are brilliant
