Still not running right
Still not running right
Hi All,
Further to my previous threads I've now cleaned the carbs, replaced the PiperX filter with a standard replacement and changed all the fuel.
Although it has got better with each change its still not right and there is a definite lack of power, I can still have WOT in first from 20mph with out fear of anything untoward happening, no front end lightness at all!
My first thougth is that, as the carbs have been off they will need rebalancing, is this the case? They were balanced probably 300 miles before it I winter stored the bike. Seems to be very vibey!
Also I may be being a little paranoid but I'd swear it doesn't sound the same any more either, I would say there was distinctly more mechanical noise from the engine.
Could any post symptoms of likely problems to see if it will jog my memory of how the bike behaves while being riden? With me not thinking its right, I'm picking up everything as being wrong so some subjective points to look at would help greatly.
If not is my next point of call a dyno?
Many thanks
Karl

I should probably re phrase that to say I think I can hear the mechanical (the noise, if say combustion was silent, cogs grinding and whirring etc haha) noises of the engine more clearly over the exhaust note than I could before.
Yep petrol is now all fresh.
Cheers

Re: Still not running right
Yes, the carbs will need balancing, but unlikely to be that far off to cause the poor performance you refer to. If the bike is running under par then you will probably hear the mechanical whirrings and clunkings more than before.
Difficult to say without seeing or hearing her - are the carbs seated properly on the inlets? They can be a bugger to get on properly.

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: Still not running right
Yeah I'm pretty sure the carbs are on right.
When I rode home earlier it started struggling when slowing down again. A problem a thought I had solved but I think a carb balance will work wonders on that score I'm also hoping it sorts the low down running as pulling away is terrible, lots of vibes!

Re: Still not running right
Karl, it would make trying to help you easier if you keep all your posts referring to this same problem in one thread
Without trying to find out what you have or haven't done previously in another post I would suggest replacing the spark plugs with new ones and as suggested a carb balance, then see what it's like. Also before balancing the carbs do as Stratman suggests, make sure the carbs are seated properly, and the clips are tightened up tight.
Also make sure the TPS (throttle position sensor) is connected to the carbs and that the vacuum pipe that goes to the fuel tap is fitted to the right outlet (not connected to the bottom outlet on the back of the fuel tap, that is a drain-off)
Chris.

Re: Still not running right
Hi Chris, noted I'll just stick to the one thread. Do you think I'll need to adjust the mixture at all? I've read a thread on a moto morini site about adjusting the pilot screw while balancing the carbs, go both screw directions until the bike stutters and then aim for the middle of these 2 positions, supposedly where the bike idles fastest.
Cheers

Re: Still not running right
Karl, I wouldn't start messing about with the mixture screws just yet. Iirc your problem only really started after laying your bike up for the winter, so if it was fine before that and you've put back the mixture screws back in the same positions after the carb strip down that shouldn't be a problem.Karl_h wrote:Hi Chris, noted I'll just stick to the one thread. Re: Still not running right
Just been out on it again to try and clear the carbs. Midrange is slightly better but at full throttle nothing happens! On the run it managed to drink 12 litres in less than 60 miles. It tried stalling when coming to a stop again so I'll have to tweak the idle back up again.
One thing that is worrying is that the Temp gauge is barely moving, done Plymouth to Paignton today and the temp gauge didn't even make it to the first marker, maybe 2mm of above the cold line. Is the Thermostat on an individual cylinder then I could believe it was running on one.
Would explain a lot.
Cheers

Re: Still not running right
Just fire it up from cold, then see if both exhaust pipes get hot equally.
Not the silencers, the pipes that come out of the heads.
Careful, as they get hot quickly, after a minute of running you won't be able to get your hand back off again!
If only one pipe gets hot, then it's only running on one.
Then report back.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Just taken a couple of videos and it actually ran a little better, what do you think?

I couldn't quite capture the metallic tapping noise very well on the camera it gets drowned out a little.
Borrowing carb balance stuff tomorrow see how that turns out.

Re: Still not running right
doesnt sound well that m8..... i dont want to say what i think it is.... let tony have a listen first lol.
sounds very agricultural atm
ok i'll say it.... i think you have a valve or 2 not seating properly. maybe a compression test is in order.
could be wrong, but worth testing to rule out.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
Re: Still not running right
Oh good! It's always sounded a little bit like that do you think the carb cleaner has cleared all the gunk off the valves?
I'm not liking how this is looking.

whats it like wit the idle turned up a bit?
and when did you last change the plugs?

Re: Still not running right
That was with the idle up a fair bit, I need to balance the carbs, but running on one was my first thought but I did the pipe check as Tony suggested. I think the plugs are probably 2 years old, I pulled the rear one the other day and it looked clean and healthy they are NGK riddys.
