One thing that really pisses me off is so call mechanics that over tighten every thing.Stripping threads is just as bloody dangerous as leaving them slack.Amateurs I expect but it doesn't stop there does it? Buy a torque wrench and use it.

in the month and a half ive had the bike ive replaced (drilled/tapped) must be 30 odd bolts that were done up far to tight and on copper slip in sight . thats why i like to do the jobs myself to make sure its done right

I got to take mine to the garage tomorrow. Admitted defeat trying to losen the sump plug. Mechanic has said that he'll losen it for me and the rest I can do at home again.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

Every one should practice with a set torque wrench till they get a good feel for the job.What feels right to most is often way off.Also condition of threads (rust,muck,oil)alters things.This is one of the most important skills to acquire.

I agree, I am a mechanic by trade for the last 20 odd years, and tightening bolts into Aluminium needs a good FEEL for what you are doing. Your right practice makes perfect. I remember teaching a young lad at our place and he soon got the idea when he had to re-tap the holes out himself !
