She no worky boss..

Its the first time I've tried to start the old girl up since probably January so i was expecting to run into a few issues....

I did manage to get her running but was a running like a bag of nails. Before being put away for the winter I decided to give the old girl a bit of a service. New spark plugs, new oil and filters.....after all that, it ran like a dream. Only thing I didnt do is a coolant change becasue it had recently been done (all I did was top up with coolant). So was expecting it to start fairly easily with a gentle of a poke and prod.

The fuel that was in it was from whenever so topped up with new fuel. Tried again and was only firing on one cylinder. Checked all my fuel hoses that I had disconnected for the respray to find one of the hoses was not quite on properly, pushed it back on and it seemed to want to run again, but, would only run on full choke. As soon as I put the choke in it would die. Started her up again (on full choke) twisted the throttle and died. By this time its getting dark and so was quite ready to give the bike a Peoples Elbow or a Hulk Hogan style Leg Drop (neither of which happened because the paint is too good looking to damage lol). Anyway, I havent yet pulled the plugs to check for spark or done much else.....thought I would come on here to ask for advice and see if there is anything in particular to look out for on these before I start going mental. Before you ask, the reg has been swapped for a finned type jobby, but, not ruling it out until I put a tester across it

check to make sure the ht leeds are on the plugs and into the caps right and also in the coils as they do come out ,
strip and clean the carbs and refill tank with new fuel only , have a bbq with the old stuff if it lights lol

I did do that actually, forgot to mention it in me post

Check the breather hoses, drain hoses and fuel hoses are correctly attached and unkinked.

Esp the vacuum hose that goes to the connector at back of the petcock NOT the one pointing down

I think I'll take a pic and see what you guys think as regards the way I've connected them up. I'msure they are all in the right place etc lol probably not though

Any body got any pics to compare too...pretty please? I'll take a pic of me in my new pink bandana/neck warmer as a reward lol

ah there yer go.

particles of paint in the pilot jet, pound to a penny.

clear it out and fit an inline filter.
you should be able to do away with it after a while, but always after a respray you will get crap in the tank, and consequently in the carbs, the smallest orifice being the side holes in the pilots.

Does this mean a general strip down??

just the carbs mate.
strip them one at a time - you will only need to drop the bowls off and remove & clean the jets and passages.
the pilot is the 5mm flathead jobby just offset from the central main jet.
you shouldnt have to strip the diaphragms off, which is a blessing cos the springs are a wonker to get back in!

you can get an inline filter from any car accessory shop - the little clear pleated paper ones will do, and you will be able to see all the crap that it's caught.

yes, but check the fuel lines are not kinked and the correct vac line is on the correct spout on the tap first... if all is good then off with the bowls.

Any pics of the correct way of having them connected kind sir?

i have a 19l on mine so no good me taking a pic for you.... there is one here somewhere recent tho.
basically the vac tube should be on the spout that points downwards.
if you are not sure, just swap the 2 smaller tubes over and see how it runs.

also make sure if you have had the tank resting on the subframe that you turned it back round and not all the way, putting a twist in the hoses.
i did this last year and it was most embarassing... especially when i jumped off it at the lights and got my boot caught in a bungee and nearly dropped it lol

The vac pipe must be connected to the one at the back of the tap pointing sideways.
The one vertically downwards has nothing connected to it, it's a drain.
