Odd noise

Post by matt1966 »

Hi all since fixing my leaky exhaust at the weekend I have noticed a sort of rattle coming from the top of the engine sounds like it is directly under the
tank, If I listen from the sides I cant hear it, just from the top. I have manual cct's and have tried adjusting them also it doesnt seem to be there when the engine is cold. Anyone have any ideas I am paranoid it is cam chain related. 8O

Yea that had crossed my mind. I am not sure what sort of sound it would make for re shimming. This is not a heavy rattle. Thanks for the reply.

check the oil level is ok first, listen to the engine with a long screwdriver pressed against your ear with the blade on the offending area.
i find this works best when you wear ear defenders as it cancels out all (most of) the background noise.

the tank (especially when nearly empty) acts like a big noise amplifier.... try it with the tank off, on a towel on the subframe maybe.
also check the clutch is bled properly with new fluid.
a rattly clutch can sound like shims.

if it does need the clearances doing (what miles btw) it will be well down on power as the valves wont be opening fully... it will sound worse when cold too
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
