Hi,
One thing I will say, the Firestorm is quite susceptible to air filter changes with after market ones, you'll probably end up with a flat spot.

As with any after market replacement parts such as a freer flowing air filter, jetting the carbs and after market cans, to get the best out of those items you really need to get it set up properly on a dyno.

In that case, What would be a recommended air filter? My mate swears blind K&N are terrible!

Eclectic, If you don't want to be messing about trying to remove a flat spot then sticking with a standard air filter is best. The down side is they are not cheap, and if you do a lot of miles I can see the temptation of using a K & N air filter or similar type, as it can be washed out, then re-oiled and ready to go again.

There's been plenty talked about this before, quite a controversial subject. Some have even gone back to the standard filter after trying a K&N. Others have had success in using a Pipercross, but there are different types I believe from Pipercross, so beware if you try one of those. A few have, and are still using a K & N air filter, but I think those have had their bike jetted to suite, are using after market cans and have had it set up properly on a dyno.

I'm running a K&N in mine, fitted by the previous owner, with standard pipes.
I have no problems with flat spots, but I have no idea if the PO had it rejetted to suit the filter.

As documented elsewhere on here, I gave up on the K&N as I couldnt get the flat spot fixed, With pipes and a stage 1 dynojet kit.
Stock filter fixed 5000rpm flat spot, but made it feel flat [which a lnear torque curve might do, some time a flat spot makes abike feel more powerfull even though it is slower!], BMC road filter fixed flat spot and feels like more upper midrange / top end.
never tried piper cross

These are all observations without dyno verification and only for my bike, others have been OK with K&N

Will any patten type air filter do or does it have to be an original Honda air filter?

F/M, I'm sure I read quite recently about an after market (pattern) air filter for the Storm being sucked together restricting air flow making it pretty useless, but not sure who supplied that, or how old it was. I personally like to stick with original equipment (OEM), although I'm sure others will be replying, saying they use a pattern item.

I usually prefer OE parts but it depends on how much it will be? Also I don't have a Honda dealership locally closest is 30 miles away!
I think Portsmouth is the only city in the UK with no main dealership! that includes Kawasaki,Suzuki and Yamaha!!! :Argue 1:

stick to a honda original filters,4 of my mates have used pattern filters to save money but ended up buying either honda or k & n filters after thier bikes felt numb...the reasons being that the eliments in pattern filters aren't as stiff as the honda and k&n's...the storm sucks more air in than a blue whale and the eliments get sucked closed resticting airflow...i've not used pipercross filters so can't comment on them.
