Rear sprocket change
Rear sprocket change
Hi all if I swap my rear sprocket for +2 teeth will I have to take a chunck out of the chain?
Re: Rear sprocket change
No, a standard length chain with a standard size 16 tooth front sprocket will fit, just
It just means your rear wheel will be nearly as for forward in the swingarm as it will go.
Any increase in rear sprocket size means you need more chain, not less to go around the sprocket.

Matt,
You need a Hornet rear sprocket, I'll see if I can find the part number.
Chris.
**EDIT** I've found it, price might be a bit out now:-

Re: Rear sprocket change
If I put +2 on the rear and -1 on front would I have to adjust chain length wanted to experiment without splitting chain as I dont have a rivet tool.

Re: Rear sprocket change
Matt, it all depends what you want. IMHO fitting a +2 (43 tooth) rear sprocket will be noticeable, as it makes the bike pick up quicker when over taking etc making top gear more usable, also when going slow using 1st gear in town etc makes the bike that much nicer to use.
I agree it won't give you an earth shattering change like -1 on the front and +3 on the rear will (as VTR1000 states), but going for those big changes in gearing will mean the engine revving a fair bit higher in any said gear, compared to +2 on the rear sprocket only.
Also remember any change in gearing will throw you speedo reading out. A Speedo Healer is one way to correct this.
It's your choice, do lets us know what you decide

I need a new chain and sprocket kit for my bike and was thinking about gearing it down a bit so would a chain and sprocket set for a 900 Hornet fit a storm then?sirch345 wrote:Matt,

Re: Rear sprocket change
F/Mike, I'm not sure about the Hornet front sprocket being the same. You could go onto the M & P site and compare part numbers for both front sprockets. As for the chain you'll have to check the number of links, the standard Firestorm chain has 102 links and is suitable for +2 teeth on the rear with a standard 16 tooth on the front.

if you use http://www.gearingcommander.com it shows the number of links you need for each sprocket combo.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
