Changing the CCT

Post by Miztaziggy »

Hey guys,

I have read the posts regarding changing the CCTs and stuff, but I dont really understand why it is so difficult...

My first bike was a CBR 600F and the CCT started to make a rattle on that at about 8000 miles. I bought a new one and changed it myself fairly easily, just wind it back, lock it off and pop it out, replace with new and all done.

Why on the VTR do you have to line up the engine etc? When the CCT is removed does the chain slip on the gears?

Yes
When the tension is released the chain can jump a couple of teeth very easily.

Does it jump even when the bike is stationary and you just release the CCT or is it a precaution to line up the engine?

Im surprised that the cam chain doesnt rattle with the VTR before the CCT fails, with the CBRs they make a rattling noise for a good while before you change the CCT.

Have a search on this site...they're not the same as CBR's...leave them alone at your peril

If you dont line the timimg marks up correctly then there is chance that the valve pushing on the cam lobe thus may turn the cam shaft round and thus bugger the timing up.

also if you dont line the timing marks up correctly then the chain will be tought, so once you replace the cct then you will not have the slackest part of the chain.

if anyone has other reason then please join in...

You either read and take heed of advice.....or rock it up because an IL4 is different. Your choice.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Im not arguing that it doesnt need doing guys or you can do it a quicker way, and the CCT on my bike doesnt need doing either - it was done at 20k miles and bike at 28k now

I was just curious as I remember it being so easy on the CBR but it sounds a much more involved job on the VTR

I will try and do a quick answer, cause it is a valid question.

It is easy on an IL4 because there are 4 seperate TDC's occuring on the camshaft through the 2 revs of the engine, so when you take the tension off the cam chain, some valves are pushing the cam one way, whle others want to push in the oppsoite direction, so the cam is stable, and not under any great force to move.

on the Storm, there is only 1 TDC acting on the cam [its like 2 single cyl engines], and if you slacken the cam chain when the valve is open, the force of valve spring will act on the cam turning it to take the spring pressure away..........it will easyly jump 2 or 3 teeth in these conditions, so you MUST go to firing TDC before you remove the CCT.

Hope that helps

It's actually an easy job, but you have to follow the instructions posted on here, rather than the Haynes manual.

But sadly, having the standard ones changed for more standard ones won't protect you, I had one let go after just 18 months of doing exactly the same thing.

W/s day?
You just missed two, mate.
I'm planning nothing until at least Sept/Oct.
And not sure about running one then, TBH, I have loads to do on the house and my own bike this year.
