Checking oil level

Post by Eclectic »

Should this be done when the bike is hot or cold?

I filled mine when it was cold, only to be asked later "should the firestorm be checked when its hot or cold...mines hot" :Ball Kick:

cold. the oil doesnt expand much, it's more that when the engine is or has just been running, the oil os thrown about & in the cooler so you could end up overfilling.
not that slightly high level will do any harm.
i set mine so i can just see oil in the sight glass with the bike on the sidestand.
this is approx 4L from empty with a new filter - honda recommend 3.9L

Thank you muchly, sir! Mine now fills the sight glass when level, but a slight lean starts showing empty glass. Reckon I should drain a bit?

Overfilling isn't so much of a problem with these engines as it is with old style il4's, there's no chance of popping a seal or similar as there aren't any within the engine that are likely to blow.
So on the sidestand or propped upright will still be ok.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Oh well - I noticed that mine was just visible on the side stand and full in the window with the bike level and crapped myself and thought I need to empty it, I had always kept it between the lines at level on the R1....

Guess I wont bother now
