wonder what made it so far out of balance?
you havent got a vacuum leak? maybe the adaptor is loose - mine was and it threw my adjustment right off.
maybe a choke plunger is sticking a bit?
might be worth a dyno run to check the fuelling... defo doesnt sound right if it was so far out of sync.
diaphragm maybe?

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Mike, I agree you shouldn't need to turn the adjustment loads of turns to bring them back into sync. Something is definitely not right, especially with the mpg dropping off like that. I wonder if a diaphragm has split in one of the carbs, seeing as you don't think it's choke related which would be favourable as Benny said. Either that or you got a fuel leak.
