wheres this oil came from?

Post by bigrich »

having started a new job and not having much time to ride the bike, i finally took it out on sunday for the first time since doing the cct's

having covered a 70 mile trip i checked the bike over, it was running great however i noticed a little spray of oil over the left hand fairing below the handlebar. tonight i have inspected the bike, none seems to have come from the front cct, i took the airbox lid off and there was a little bit of oil in it. i checked the oil in the window and it was at the top mark, so not much oil gone at all - just wondered if any of you guys would have an idea where its come from!

dinosaurs mate. and prehistoric trees.

no, seriously, i think you will find you either forgot to put back one of the cam cover bolt seals, or fitted them upside down, or you didnt fit the cam cover rubber gasket properly, probably in the recess around the plughole.

either that or you have a slight leak from the master cylinder.
if it feels like 'dry' oil it is brake fluid,

or maybe you missed the spout with the big front breather tube - easily done.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

There's two short breather pipes that come up form each carb vertically into the triangular sections in the corner of the airbox.
The front one might not have engaged when you put the airbox back on.
Alternatively there is a breather tube from the front cam cover that's a pig to get connected when refitting the airbox, as you have to work by feel.
Might be that.

If it was one of the "half-moon" shaped rubber gasket protrusions not seating properly on the cambox cover gasket it would piss out more oil than just a weep.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

cheers tony, think it may well be the breather pipe, i remember it being a t@ to get back on!

the half moon ones look fine to me with no leakage there!
