Flaky idle, misfiring, and dash resetting
Hey lads,
Ignoring the fact that I just finished my successful 1000 mile journey from the wild east to London, there still are some problems which bother me quite a lot.
When it heats up properly after a long ride, and I happen to stop on a red light, the engine tends to shut down while idling. While it's an annoyance by itself, this shut down also manages to reset the trips and the clock on the dash -- and that kind of worries me.
I do believe the carbs need cleening and synchronizing, but why the hell does it reset the dash! They do not reset when I shut down the ignition myself! May a weak battery be the cause of that?
P.S. anyone round-ish London know a good place to take care of the carbs or could hold my hand and help me do it myself? I'm not local, so any help appreciated.

i take it you still have the original unfinned regulator / rectifier?
have a feel / peep under the right tailpiece about 1/3 back.... look for a small 2"x3" black box with a plug.... replace it for a finned one for a cbr125 off ebay.... about £20
could also be that whats causing it to stall but also check the condition of the air filter.

I think spoonbender has a facelift model Benny, so reg/rec should be ok as standard, shouldn't it?

yeh m8 the later one should have a finned r/r but they can still fail.Kev L wrote:I think spoonbender has a facelift model Benny, so reg/rec should be ok as standard, shouldn't it?

The state of the battery is, in my opinion, bad. As far as I know, it was left untouched throughout the winter and it drained itself, was charged later on, but I'm very tempted to buy a new one.rob's red storm wrote:Check battery connections and state of battery if its resetting, plenty of peeps round the London area where abouts?
I'm in Wimbledon, but I can drive around, of course.
Is there any kind of diagnostics to determine if it is the rectifier that is faulty?benny hedges wrote:yeh m8 the later one should have a finned r/r but they can still fail.

Re: Flaky idle, misfiring, and dash resetting
just chuck the old battery in a bush,,,, the wombles will make good use of it.
theres a faultfinding procedure for the r/r in the pdf manual in the workshop section.
easy to do, basically just check to voltage at tickover - should be over 14v
the battery is an expendable item though...

Re: Flaky idle, misfiring, and dash resetting
It's hard to see how the dash resetting is also affecting this problem.
If it was just stalling at tickover, that's a classic "carb balance/turn up the tickover a bit" solution.
BTW, tickover needs to be a little higher with these bikes, 13-1400 will do.
But as the dash is also resetting I'd suspect a wiring fault somewhere, earthing out and dropping voltage to not only the clocks but ignition.
Good luck finding that, though....
Have you got an alarm/immobiliser fitted?

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

No custom alarms / immobilisers. And the dash was never reset while riding, or when turning off the ignition properly.tony.mon wrote:It's hard to see how the dash resetting is also affecting this problem.

Right now I'm willing to blame the weak battery.

Ok, checked the R/R, it's good. Idle battery voltage is ~13.8ish2, which is, as far as I understand, also good.
That said, where do I sync the carbs in London? Any recommendations?

Can do it at my place. I live in Kingston and have everything you need. Literally 10 minutes away from wimbledon by bike.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience!
