Cleaning exhaust pipes

Post by Miztaziggy »

I have spent about 6 hours trying to clean these today, cleaned with wire brush, then a few coats of hammerite rust gel and then hours of sanding with emery cloth and sand paper. This is how far I got, and if you see the close up, the surface still looks pitted and horrible...is there a good product out there for doing this any easier?

Bench grinder with polishing mop, paint them, wrap them or cover them up with a belly pan! I went down the wrapping and painting route to save on having to continuously clean/polish them

Pickling Gel. Go to a DECENT old fashioned hardware shop or most welding supplies places, and pick up a pot. Brush it on, leave it wash it off. It won't leave a polished finish, but it will get rid of rust/discolouration and leave them clean. Its then that you get a big dollop of elbow grease on them and get the shine.....if thats what you want. Won't stay bright for long though. They will discolour over time.

Thanks Barry I'll try some of that.

Anyone know where to get gaskets for joints in pipes? I can find gaskets for cylinder ends but not pipe joints....should I just use gasket paste?

Yes number 6 - good guess

I had to hammer the old one out with a screw driver - and im pretty sure it was asbestos which isnt good, it looked like asbestos anyway.

£11 is more than I thought - will gasket paste not do the same job?
