Prolink bearing

Post by Miztaziggy »

While I have the rear in bits, I have been trying to grease the bearings...on the drawing below, I have taken part 5 and 18 out from the end of the triangular piece of alloy thing, and it came out very easily, it had very slight corrosion so I covered in copper grease and refitted.

I undid bolt 13 to get at number 8 but cant get the bolt out. It swings fine and doesnt seem tight, but no matter how much I hammer it, it doesnt budge. Is this supposed to come out?

Should I also take out number 12 to grease bearing 6? Bearings 6 and 8 look like the ones in the workshop knowledge base but since I cant get them out, dont know for sure.

Oh, and is it also worth getting at number 5 and 19 on the bottom of the shock to grease those too?

what do you mean you cant get the bolt out?????
have you tried drifting it out?
if it wont come out it's probably bone dry and needs greasing.
dont force any of the bushes though unless youre replacing them.

yes, grease the shocker bushes too.
and the top one.
but remember to tighten it (like i didnt!)

I took the nut off number 13, and hammered the end of number 8 but it wont budge...the other end (the allen key end) doesnt move out of its hole. The bearing doesnt seem to be dry, it moves about freely when the other end has been released from the shock. There is no pressure or weight on it holding it in, I dont understand why it wont come out.

Sorry - I dont know what drifting means?

I wasnt trying to get the bushes out, I was just taking the metal tubes and greasing those hoping that was ok.

they should come out if you have taken nut off. have you tried to uncrew the bolt from the other end, that some times helps break the seal.

one more thing which may be obvious [sorry if I am teaching granny to suck eggs], but dont hammer the end of the thread, just put the old nut back on with some clearance and hammer that, then you wont damage the thread.

Drifting is just a term for hammering things out with a punch or other shaped tool [called a drift!].

next steps heat, wd40 and then bigger hammer

Yea, I thought it should come out easily as the other one did.

The bolt screws very easily from the allen key end, I span it with an allen key for a good few minutes, then tried hammering it again. It doesnt feel at all siezed which is why I dont understand why it isnt coming out. I wondered if maybe there might be some trick to getting it out....

And no - I hadnt covered it with a nut before hammering, so thanks for the advice I will do that when I have another go tomorrow.

I sprayed some WD40 down the hole and then left it for the night, ill try it again tomorrow (with the nut on the end of the bolt this time  )

Undo 15 and 16 and remove both triangular plates.
Then you can see where the bolt is sticking, and you can properly clean up that area before reinstalling, too.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
