European motorail

Post by ktd001 »

Has anyone tried shipping their bike across Europe?
Trying to plan a 2 week tour around Italy for next year and don't want to do the traditional 4 days of hard blasting just to get to Italy & back (cost of fuel, peage, hotels etc). Considering flying over and hiring a bike but would prefer to use my own if possible so wondered if anybody had tried either freighting or motorailing the bike? If you have any links it would be helpful.

Cheers

Should be easy.
You either get on the EuroStar or boat to France and get on a train with the bike to the south of France. (or further?)
From their you ride into Italy.

Check the French Rail site or ask Oliv to check it out for ya?

I had looked at it as a method of getting to one of the Spanish GP's at the start of the season. If I remember rightly, the cost of the ferry plus rail was a frightening price in comparison to a straight drive. I think it was the Eurostar that crippled the thought.

ORing

I know, thats why I don't want to waste any time getting there!

Looks like the cheapest way is going to be to fly and hire a bike from Rome (574 Euro for 10 days on a transalp). All the others work out at 800 euros+.
The train from Dusseldorf to Verona is £340 with bike but that still leaves all the costs of getting to Germany.
Motorail from Paris is £800+
A van delivery was £550 (same price as shipping a bike to Oz!)

So, will I come back a trailie fan? Nah
