I have removed the old dust seal - it was like welded in with rust and crap off the forks, came out in about a million little pieces

The new one doesnt fit in easily though. Should it slide in or am I going to have to hammer it in?

bash it in with whats left of the old one.
where did you get them from???? im suspecting if they are hard to get in you may have been sold the wrong ones. they should just pop in.

Front fork dust seals

Bought from eBay, they look exactly same as others, but the originals came out in 1000 pieces, nothing left to bash in with....

Maybe sand the edge of them slightly to ease them in?

looks to me like the outer lip of the old seal.. no wonder you cant get the new ones in lol
you need to pry that out and then carefully clean up the forks.
get all that corrosion off before you pop the new ones in

The copper ring you mention might be the upper bush- and no, that sin't meant to come out unless you've removed the cap head bolt at the bottom and use the upper leg as a draw hammeer to remove the leg and its bushes.

Hard to tell from the photo.
It might be just as well to completely strip the legs down and see what, if anything, needs doing.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Nice one Benny, you were right, that little copper ring with the rubber stuck to it was the ring from inside the old dust seal.

The old dust seal was really hard and rotten, so when the old dust seal wouldnt come out, I used a screw driver to pull it out in bits, but it must have left behind it's inner copper ring.

Used a screw driver and hammer to pry them out - came out easily and then new dust seals fit in very easily.

What a relief!!!

Now with the sanding, painting and refitting in the morning :D
