scottoiler? worth it or worthless??

My storm came with scottoiler fitted, its empty!
Do I remove or refill??? anyone any experience in using one ?
I always suspected they may be a messy waste of time!!!

Im in exactly the same position, I was going to buy some oil for mine and fill it.

I think they will be quite useful from reading the reviews.

Very useful. Keep it on and just clean your chain and wheel regularly. I do mine everytime I wash the bike. It means I never have to worry about my chain being too dry and your chain will last a lot longer with it.

i was thinking of getting one for mine but other things take priority i'm afraid (like getting a job) imo as long as you look after the chain and regular cleaning and oiling whats the need for one.

Got one on both bikes. You can get 35,000 out of a set of chain and sprckets with one. When Scotoiler say "you can extend your chain life by 7 times" it is perfectly true.

I had one on a GSX-R750M from new in 1991. The chain on it was still the original when I sold the bike two years later with 20,000 miles on it. They are really good, when you get them sited correctly, and the oiler doesn't forget to oil the chain on a regular basis like the rider might! Having said that you have to remember to refill the unit every 4,000 miles ish or extend that with a touring remote reservoir.
I haven't fitted one to any bike since but as chain lubes have improved I have stuck with ptfe dry lube, which gives a good result.
If it's fitted I would give it a go and see how you feel with it. My only concern was on wet days and left hand bends the rear felt a little flighty. This may be more in my heeed than factual.

they are well worth the money spent.
they definately easily double the lifespan of your chain and minimise adjustments.
if you are getting splats or slipping it wants turning down.
you only need 1 drop per mile or 2 to keep the chain tip top.

only issue i had with mine was when the rubber filler bung came out and pissed oil all over the exhaust and made a massive wacky races style smokescreen in lancaster town centre!
i dont use it on the storm now due to having white wheels but mainly because my vac relief valves kept airlocking it.
i wont part with it though... i'll use it on the cbx or summat.

dont bother with the manual alternatives.... theyre crap.

A big recommend from me, first time using one on my Storm (the yellow one) for four years now, and wouldn't part with it.

Only had one chain and sprocket set in coming up five years, and I drag race mine sometimes, tour abroad and thrash it mercilessly, with an upgraded engine, so putting more power though it than standard- and the scottoiler just quietly does its job......

And if you ride in winter having to lube the chain after salty rides to and from work etc, it's a pain.

Scottoiler is fit and forget, just fill it up weekly or before a long ride.

I suggest that you both take them off as they are a waste if time.
Do not try to sell them on e-bay.
Don't put them up for sale on this web site.
Send them to me and i'll cover your postage for you, it's the best I can do for a fellow Storm owner

I also recommend using a Scott Oiler

My bike had a tight spot in the chain that didn't go away with chain lube being used regularly on the chain. It was only one link, but not long after using a Scott Oiler that tight spot disappeared.

The only thing I will say about them, is they need the feed turned up a little in the winter, as the colder weather must thicken the oil slightly slowing down the drip feed.

As the others have said, a definite must for longer chain life.

You can actually buy different grades of "Scottoil" for winter and summer use - I turn it up or down dep. on temperature though.
