Great commute in, then CCTs gone...
156 miles, 2 fuel and 1 pee stop - under 2 hours. Saw a red storm on A34 just outside Sutton Scotney - and a yellow one at Fareham.
Pulled up at work - and the front cylinder is going TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA. Guess I'll be getting it recovered - CCT failure I reckon...
Arses!

Re: Great commute in, then CCTs gone...
I have them in hand to get done....
I think I've been "lucky" it sounds like the chain is flailing - but I don't think it jumped the sprocket - bike was ticking over fine (well for a second, I killed the motor ASAP)
Fingers crossed - I can't afford this - anyone know what it'll cost me to have manuals fitted and/or retimed..?

Wish I had the time fella - it's all eaten up with work, commuting and (ahem) Lodge....
I'm a reasonable & competent mechanic - just have no garage or workshop (in digs) to do it...

i really wouldnt trust the work to a garage tbh, plus youd have to pay for recovery to get it there as it obviously cant be ridden?

Clive, thats a lucky escape if no damage.....................you were tempting fate cause you were planning on doing that job at the Midlands workshop day, but couldnt make it.
Geo, so were you........be afraid, be very afraid.
As benny said, make sure and sort Pauline out as well..........and after that get her CCT's fixed

Good news? You can do this without a garage and shelter; it only takes three to four hours.
As long as it's not raining....
If the valves are bent, it'll probably be the front pot, but if you check the spring tension before you start you will know this.
Get small screwdriver down the end, and feel if there's spring tension.
Sometimes, the spring just gets weaker, allowing the chain to rattle but not get slack enough to jump sprocket teeth.
If you need to swap heads that's all doable within a day, including shimming.
All you need to do is to work out what parts you'll need before you start.....

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I got it picked up by an ex-Honda engineer - he's hopeful from my description of the noise (yes I stood in the works car park and went TAKKA TAKKA TAKKA) and the fact it was running fine, that I may get away with it.
Only time will tell....

Dan, my mechanic's just phoned - I must be "one of the luckiest persons alive" - the chain had jumped 2 teeth - but I've got away with the valves! Apparently some marks where they'd just kissed the pistons, but that's all. Phew. Did mean heads off etc - so £260 with gaskets - I'm supplying Trays CCTs....
At least I'm sorted - and I'll get P's done ASAP....

Out of interest, how much would it have cost had the valves been bent?
Someone like Benny or Tony will know this one - but if you do it yourself and the valves have been bent, is it an expensive job?

£140 inc parts and shims.
Assuming 2 bent exhaust valves, the most likely outcome.

I'm guessing gaskets ain't cheap!
When I had the Volvo cam belt snap (yup I'm cursed) the valves and gaskets were the dearest parts!
It ended up costing me a grand and a half - and that was at mates rates with parts at trade cost....
P says it was dear - but Mech pulled both heads and checked the valves. That ain't a quick job.
Far cheaper to get preventative replacements in.....
:-(
