What's this nipple?

Post by Eclectic »

Hi all, whislt giving the old girl a clean up I spotted this nipple tucked up under the fairing on the right hand side on the front edge of the clutch cover.

Is their supposed to be something connected to it?

Thanks
Nigel.

Hi Nige
That is a drain nipple onto which a short hose was attached (suggest you attach one) to allow coolant out should the pump seal go bad (so the oil and coolant doesn't mix) and fitted post 98 models which had just a wee 'weep' hole. When next I have the cover off, I'll be attaching one myself as the hole just bungs up with crud.

Actually, it IS where the oil is coming from.

Is this a simple job?

Just order a new gasket/s and check out the relevant parts in the PDF service manual. get some gasket remover spray to get the old one off, plus some liquid silicone gasket. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-BOND-GASKET-SEA ... _928wt_907

Drain oil and coolant Take off clutch cover - remove old gasket and replace apply small liquid silicone on one side [very careful near the water channels] and lightly grease the other. Do up bolts and reconnect hoses etc.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Thanks for the advice.

I think Ive ordered everything, but reading through the Haynes I cant tell whether I HAVE to replace the Mechanical seal or not?

So, question is: Do I HAVE to replace the machincal seal when doing this?

So far I have the slilicone gasket sealer. clutch cover gasket, water pump O-ring and the oil seal.

Oh well, I manned up and got on with it, only to find a stone poking through my clutch cover from the inside from my off last year. Was impossible to see from the outside as it was a pin prick. Im guessing the stone punched through and was then covered by more alu in the slide. Its a pin prick of a hole but Im gutted. Heart sank when I saw it. Im right in thinking these things cant be repaired?

Yes, it can, a dab of Araldite will do the trick, or two-part liquid metal compound.

Fit a carbon or Kevlar cover and no-one will know.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
