Can the stock air filter be cleaned rather than replaced, if so how ?

I think they are a disposable item, however I would imagine judicious use of an airline and brush would extend the service limits of it. Like everything else really needs must, or whatever it was me old nan used to say!

i was thinking of an airline Kev didn't know if it could be washed with chemicals to aid cleaning

I would be concerned about using liquids on it, but again thats probably just me being cautious.

Last time I just turned mine upside down, bashed the dead flies out of if and blew the rest out with an airline. They're only £20 new though, so will just buy one next time.

They only need cleaning and oiling every 60,000 miles as they supposedly work better when all the crap starts to settle (according to the leaflet that came with mine) and if you have fruity cans they will let your engine breath better but you. Should really get the bike jetted if you're going to use em because they can make it run lean.
