Is it normal (i suspect it isn't) for the shock linkage to rest on top the exhaust pipe?
The shock is set on minimum pre-load, compressing the bike lifts the shock off the pipe but attempting to add pre-load makes things worse. Thought it may be the linkage on the wrong way but it looks like it does in the haynes.
Is it a common problem?
thanks

Re: Shock linkage touching exhaust
i would guess that at some time someone has tried jacking the bike up under the collector box, under the back of the sump and bent it slightly.
good luck if you ever have to take the exhaust off!
it could also be that the shock has been fitted turned round wrong.
the damping adjustment screw should be facing the right side of the bike and the top mount should have the 2 plates pointing forward, not sideways.
if it is fitted sideways the shock will be on an angle and won't line up proper.
(dont ask how i know!)

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
Re: Shock linkage touching exhaust
Normally there's not a lot of clearance, think about quarter inch in old money.
Do you have standard pipes fitted?
Surely it would the link pipe not fitted correctly taking up the clearance rather than a problem with the shock.

Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...
Re: Shock linkage touching exhaust
had a look under the top mount, there are two plates but i can't tell what should be forward or sideways, how could i check?
The re-bound adjuster is on the right as if you were sat on the bike. will check the collector for jacking damage but seems most likely linakge is touching the pipe
shame as its a nice bike but a bit neglected.
when mine was mot'd the garage used a jack under the front downpipes - bit alarming at the time.

I'd have seized the b8stard warmly by the throat and had a quiet word if he'd tried that with mine......bbb wrote:

All that's happened is that he's pushed the rear engine's downpipe too far into the lower section.
Release the exhaust clamp nuts at both heads, and undo all of the clamp bolts.
Then realign the front pipe and wiggly joined part further down the rear downpipe, and it'll clear the shock linkage.
Now re tighten the head nuts, and then the three clamp bolts.
And then strip and regrease the linkages, as the heat will have dried all of the grease in the lower linkage section.
Sorted.
Then seize the so-called mechanic warmly by the throat, and publish their details in the "one to avoid" section, making sure you tell them about it, and why.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
