white whine....

Post by benny hedges »

well.... put my bike back together after the broken chain episode... all seemed well.
bit of a clunk going into gear, but i think that may have just been first start with new oil - changed to fully synthetic 10w/30 as its done a few miles now.

clutch works ok but after about 10 miles i noticed a bit of a whine in 5th & 6th,,,, then 4th, then all apart from 1st/

when i roll off the throttle it goes, put power back on and it's there again.
so i think i can safely say my gearbox is well and truly on the way out.
last 2000 miles or so it's been randomly missing gears and jumping out so at first i suspected the selector drum or fork worn or shitted up, as in needing oil change (usually first sign oil needs doing is i get a bit of clutch slip)
the whining is indicative of a worn shaft or bearing.

the fact that it's there in every gear, under load, and constant with road speed not engine speed, makes me suspect it's the output shaft bearing, which i can understand as it wouldve took hell of a knock when the chain snapped and smashed the casing...

hopefully it either goes away or lasts a few more weeks til i get new bike.
then it's getting put away until new engine is built up.
cba stripping it down just yet, but will do once new arrival arrives :)
pics should be interesting.

I have complete gearbox internals if you need some.

And cranks, roods , pistons, in fact everything internal.

All you'll need is bearings.

Most likely what you describe about jumping out of gear is just selector forks , possibly compounded by the output bearing.

If as you say it's in all gears then it must be the bearing, something on the output shaft, anyway.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

yeh output bearing is my thought too.
was also thinking... to bodge the cover & slave cyl bac on, i drilled the holes deeper and tapped studs into them.
wonder if it's drilled right onto the bearing and is pushing it back with the stud??

it will have to do until i have all the parts tho

If so it will either get quieter as the end of the stud gets worn away or much noisier as the bearing gives up

Place your bets, gentlemen.....
