Fitting a CBR600RR master cylinder

Post by slipper 1 »

Got hold of a CBR 600RR M/C as I hear they are a good upgrade for the existing M/C fitted to the storm. Anything I need to watch out for when fitting it? Just waiting for some shorty black levers to come as well. rideitmoto were doing a deal, shorty levers and billet grips for $80 delivered.

it should go straight on assuming the banjo's are the same size?
let us know how it feels with it on....

It took about 15 minutes for the swap. New copper washers, brake light connections fitted straight on, Brakes bled and done. Brakes are a lot sharper now, much less effort required on the lever. Alrerady have wavy discs and EBC HH pads, but the CBR M/C has cetainly sorted the brakes out ! Just need to take it easy now till I get the feel for them. Shorty levers next...

they look very similar to mine m8.... i changed the clutch mc as well so they matched and got a much lighter feel at the lever.
they look the same as the ones fitted on the 2005 facelift model - very nice :biggrin

The master cylinder is off a 2006 600RR, got it on eblag for £25. Not sure what kind of discs that are fitted, they were on the bike when I got it. It almost feels like going from manual brakes to power assisted !

Slipper,
Just a word of warning...............Based on the laws of physics you should now have less braking, the CBR master cyl is bigger diameter than the Storm (Storm has a 14mm piston, CBR has 15.87mm) , so you now have stiffer lever feel, but less hydraulic pressure to the calipers.
So either your existing M/C was clogged up, or your hands and head are telling you the stiffer lever pressure feels better so therefore the brakes must be better.

Have a look at this thread, http://www.haymouth.co.uk/phpBB3/viewto ... ilit=brake and you will also see some of my data from a copy of PB last year, where there test rider rated the braking on their project GSXR1000K1 as much better with a new bigger diameter radial master cylinder, but the data logger showed he was wrong, the stopping distance was much worse.

if you also get a set of calipers from same era CBR600 [before the radial calipers on the RR], and fit them, then you will have the best brakes, that is what I have ended up with and I am well happy

Interesting... I now use a lot less pressure on the lever to get more braking. I will need to strip the original M/C to see if the seals were damaged. The fluid was quite dirty, despite a fluid change about 400 miles ago.

So, in that case, and very interesting it is. What is the best replacement M/C?

To get beter braking on the Storm the best improvement is to fit calipers with more piston area, then match that with a good sized master cylinder. I played safe and once I found the Calipers I wanted, I used the matching M/C, then I know the pressure vs feel compromise is what the manufacturer planned.

Best improvement I made to my brakes was to sort out the fork damping and fit good springs. Now I can feel what's happening and apply more braking force.

also a good point there. Better brakes will show up the flaws in the stock front end. you will need better springs and oil if you dont want them bottoming out all the time!

And the winner is?

Would like to make as many mprovements as poss to make the Storm a "keeper". Bolted "blue spot" calipers on the front of my 900 Divi and the brakes feel so much better now - and it stops too (bonus!).That was a straight swap retaining the D9 M/C but sounds like you did the whole kit & caboodle - are the calipers a straight swap or do you need spacers and stuff?
Give me sunshine after the Storm

Arfur,
have a look at the link I posted a bit further up this thread, that covers the mods needed to fit them and the size options. all I can say is every storm owner who has tried my brakes says they want them!
