Classic reg/rec issue, but the wiring has eaten itself

Post by chojindan »

Thought I smelt something burning this morning on my way to work, now I know it was my regulator/rectifier!

I'd just arrived at a mate's house and the battery was completely dead after a 30 mile ride around the M27... Bugger.

Knowing that reg/rec issues are common on VTRs, I set about looking for the bloody thing on the bike - low and behold this is what I found!

A slightly melted reg/rec

A completely burnt out pin!

I can probably source a new reg/rec quite easily, but i'm not 100% sure I can salvage the wiring - collective mind of VTR1000.org: Any solutions?
Typical that I have a trackday booked on Tuesday as well :/

Not sure what to do about the wiring but I know where you can source a Reg/Rec from a Yami R6 that goes in well with the VTR. Does take a little bit of bodging with the wiring but looks like you have to do that anyways and there is full instructions of how to do it here:

As for where to get the Reg/rec just PM me your addy as I happen to have an R6 one laying around here that was sent to me by a fellow member but is surplus to requrements and I will happily send you it for the bargin price of bugger all!

With care and a small electrical (hand operated)screwdriver lol you can remove the terminals from the block connector instead of chopping and finding they're too short.

Managed to fit the new reg/rec yesterday after collecting the part from Pinky here - he's a top chap, so thanks once again mate for your help on that one - I used most of the spade connectors too as the ones on the storm were completely different sizes!
Had to strip the wiring back a fair bit as the negative and one of the stator/pulse leads had burnt, the rest were in ok nick but re-terminated them anyway.
The good news is my battery took a charge overnight and appears to have come out unscathed and i've just ridden the 30 odd miles home ok!

One question I have though - there doesn't appear to be any change in the voltage when she's fired up, even if I blip the throttle she stays at 14.3v pretty much constantly - is that normal?
I would have expected the voltage to be rev dependent, but what do I know
