Suspension bearings

Before I had my crash, I had heard the back squeaking a lot when it was warm. When I bounced up and down on it, it sounded like a rusty old bed.

As part of replacing parts from the crash, I have had it all apart again today and when I took the sleeve out of the hole that holds the little barrel thing with the 3 connection points on it to the swing arm, the innards dropped out as grey dust sort of like pencil leads.

Are those bearings made of graphite?

Im going to order a new set, but cant work out how to get the existing ones out to replace them? Any one know please?

Also - what sort of grease is best to use when refitting?

I think it is the bearings labelled as 20 on the image above.

I cant decide though which of these is the right one to get, and if I will need 2 Nr of whichever is right??

No they are not made of graphite, that should have been a steel needle roller bearing!

You will need 2 needle bearings and the inner sleeve, part 8, might also be worth getting the seals as well.

When I got the sleeve out, the roller things inside came out as dust. I swear it came out exactly the same as the dust from an exhaust packer gasket when they get crumbled

So I will need 2 of these then?

BTW Miz how did u find the parts on the David Silver site. I cannot see any part numbers on the exploded diagram??

That claims to be the pivot bearing, which would be the big one that is for the main pivot, the ones you are looking for should be called linkage bearings or something like that.
And don't try and clean up the sleeve, if the needles are shot, the sleeve will be too. It should be a precision ground and hardened journal for the rollers to run on, once it has rusted and pitted, it will not work, so your new bearings will just get damaged and need replacing again.

So...where can I get parts from other than David Silvers? Anyone got a good website they have used before that is reliable?

Darkember...I just clicked on VTR1000 firestorm on their site and scrolled through the list till I found the bearings. I tried typing in part numbers I had from other sites but David Silvers never seems to recognise them and seems to have their own part number system or something

You want somewhere that does the full linkage kit, because if one or two are gone the rest won't be far behind.

I had a look on WEMOTO but it looked like their kit was just for the pivot and they don't show any inner sleeves. You might have to wait for one of the many people who had to replace theirs already to come and help with some direction on part numbers and suppliers.

Other thing is to phone Silvers, or local Honda dealer and talk to someone who knows the parts list.

Thanks Wicky, they dont list them by bike on that site, just by size as far as I can see, so im wondering if anyone knows the sizes of the bearings required?

Update Miz once fitted that it is the correct one. Would be handy to have a thread with known & fitted bearings with their relevant serial numbers.

Yeah, once I have fitted them, ill update this to confirm for anyone else who may need in future...Im a little disappointed that no one else has a good link for ordering these, or a kit for doing the whole lot, especially since there looks to be a few people in the knowledge base bit who have done this.

Im still struggling to find the sleeve, I have e-mailed a couple of places so will hopefully get a response on Monday.

I did this job a few weeks back. My Linkage was so seized that I had to hack saw the whole thing off. Tried for hours to hammer one of the bolts out but it wouldn't budge.

For Â£27 I got an entire new linkage and bearings from ebay. Might just be easiest to do that?
