Leaky exhaust

Post by Miztaziggy »

Fitted the new high level cans last night and the 3 joints near the back wheel were all blowing like mad.

The rear cylinder to downpipe link was blowing slightly, even though there was a packer in there and the clamp was on tight.

The downpipes to link pipes were both blowing a lot, neither had a gasket in or anything but both were tight to get on and both clamps were tight.

I bought some fire putty stuff today and am going to try a bit of that on the joints tonight, but in my experience, that stuff never works, or if it does work, never holds for very long before it gets blown out and blows again.

Any tips from anyone please? What do you use to seal the joints on the exhausts?

May need a new packer for the rear downpipe, as for the other 2, how much space is there between the clamp joints?

The downpipe one used to blow all the time, and a packer never fixed it, so im not that worried about that one. But the link pipes never used to blow.

The old pipes (the ones you have bought) felt exactly the same to slip on to the standard down pipes, but when I tightened the clamps on those, even fairly loose, the links never blew.

With these new link pipes, they are nice and snug, but even when I tighten the fcuk out of the clamps, there is still a lot of gas coming through at the joint.

I bought some fire putty stuff tonight and put a layer of it between layers of aluminium foil about 4 layers of foil think. I made like a make shift repair bandage type thing and wrapped it round the joint and put the clamp over the top. Ran it for a few minutes and it wasnt blowing, let it get hot to make the paste harden and now left it for the night. Not sure how long that will last though, im betting first time im out on it, it will fall apart.

Mine did the same. I found that Halford's cheapo putty worked a treat. Just smothered the joints, not the neatest looking job though.
