Doesn't like the rain

Post by chris300hills »

Anyone got any simple cures for a Storm which hates the rain? Anything more than heavy drizzle and she quickly starts misfiring, no revs and eventually cuts out. After leaving it for five or ten minutes, normally starts again and runs OK until gets wet again. Have tried silocn sealant on the front plug lead and the coil cables but doesn't seem to have made any difference. Normally when it happens, a good spray of WD-40 cures it temporarily but obviously not a lasting solution.

Have bought a secondhand coil with cables but at the moment don't have time to fit them. Any ingenious but extremely quick and simple ideas would be much appreciated. The British summer isn't predictable enough for my bike.

Have you made sure the front spark plug drain hole is clear?

There is a small drain hole in the cyl head casting to drain out water, but it can get blocked. You can just about find the hole on the front of face of the head, to the right hand side of the exhaust.

Check that the rubber boot isn't split. I had this on mine and it took ages to find. As the water warmed up, capilliary action caused the moisture to short the spark causing the misfire. £25 plug boot sorted it out.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

thanks guys, as helpful as ever. I should have remembered about that drain hole - I saw it mentioned before. I'll give it a go. Might leave the guttering suggestion as a last resort though!

The water butt only slows you down, good idea, but didn't work out as well as I'd hoped.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
