Later spec oil filter on a '99

Post by Opel »

Hi

I’ve just serviced my storm, including an oil filter change. I’ve noticed that I inadvertently fitted a filter specified for the later 2003 onward model, mine is a ’99 vintage. It would appear that the new one is slightly smaller than the original.

Should I sacrifice all my lovely new oil to replace the filter for the correct one?

I was told you couldn't get the older bigger ones anymore and the new smaller type had replaced it.

I've been using the smaller type on my bike for a while now, but you got me thinking is this true. So I went up into my workshop and found the filter numbers. But still none the wiser after checking out part numbers at Ron Ayres, David Silver, Wemoto and Lings Honda sites.

Old bigger oil filter No. 15410-MM9-P03

New smaller filter No. 15410-MCJ-505

I only noticed my error when I finally sat down and glanced through the invoice that came with my service items.

The filter as now fitted is a HIFLO HF204 and according to their online catalogue this is for the 2003 onward Storm. However, I should have fitted a HF303 apparently, which is more than slightly concerning.

If you’ve been using the smaller variety without any issues, well that’s the acid test really, and thus answers my query. Nevertheless, makes you wonder… I’ve emailed Hiflo to get their take on it but if I get a reply at all, I can imagine what it’ll say.

If you come up with any thoughts I'll like to here them... for peace of mind if nothing else. :cool2

I just had a look around, this company selling genuine Honda oil filters are saying they same thing as I was told, so..............

GENUINE HONDA OIL FILTER PART NUMBER 15410-MCJ-505 ( THIS NUMBER HAS ALSO REPLACED THE 15410-MM9-P03 PART NUMBER) THIS FILTER IS SHORTER THAN THE 15410-MM9-P03, BUT IT IS NOW THE RECOMMENDED FITMENT BY HONDA .

Top marks to Hiflo, I've received a reply. For completeness I cut and paste it below.

Hello Oliver,

We strongly advise that only the recommended oil filter is used as product warranty is in place for our Hiflofiltro catalogue applications only.

Fortunately HF204 and HF303 have similar pressure drop ratings, though the HF303`s capacity is significantly higher.

I hope this helps and thank you for using Hiflofiltro.

Regards,

Im using the Champion version from Weemoto. It was the same size as the Honda one that I removed. The Hiflo they sell is still the HF-303 version.
