Need to know several things before I tackle this job.
I am up to speed with setting TDC on both cylinders for checking the clearances. However, I do notice that you can only check the clearance on one set of lobes. The other set is under the cam holders.
My questions are:
1: I presume I will need to remove the holders to access the 2nd lobes?
2: If the 1st question is correct. Is is best to remove one holder at a time or do both at the same time?
3: If a shim needs to be changed how do I secure the cam chain & prevent the crank from rotating?
4: Is it best to remove one cam at a time?
5: Will my CCT need to be removed?
Haynes manual is rather vague.
I would very much appreciate a sequence proceedure to follow from the point eg: Rear Cylinder TDC achieved & ready to go.

you dont check the clearance under the lobes... there wont be any lol.
you check on the journal opposite the lobe.... the lowest part of the cam if you like... imagine an egg shape...
you are measuring between the fat end and the bucket.
when the cylinder is at tdc on the firing stroke, you can get at all 4 buckets on each cylinder.
dont remove anything yet.... just check and make a note of the clearance.
you only need to remove the top bearing cover to access the camshaft for removal, if a shim is out of tolerance and needs replacing.
you dont need to lock the crank in position, it doesnt matter as you will be timing it up again anyway when you refit the cams (if you have to remove them)
yes you will need to remove the cct... on whichever cylinder you are working on, when it is at the correct tdc (firing stroke) but only if you need to remove a cam to change a shim.
you can check the clearances by just removing the cover.
and yes you will need to remove the cams one at a time.... if you find a way of removing them both at the same time, please let me know!
(but only if a shim needs changing!!!)
that is the big honda con about the shim service.... 99% of the time they wont change any, just check them, which once youve got the hang of it is a 2hr job tops.

I was refering to egg shaped part as the lobe which at TDC should have clearance beneath it. Also I was concerned about the lobes under the holders which on all photos I have been looking at I could not see. I have now seen that there are gaps beneath the holders to gain access to those lobes.

I find a set of cranked (angled, off-set, or whatever you wish to call them) feeler gauges similar to these in the link will make measuring the valve clearances much easier:-

it should be a sliding fit with a bit of resistance, not loose, not grabbing.
once you get going you will get the hang and then see that its a relatively straightforward job!
