FEELER: aluminum suframe (fairing stay?)....

Post by mik_str »

Here's my story.... :)

I would really like to lose the VTR's OEM steel subframe and fairing stay. I bought both a used (straight) VTR suframe as well as a stock aluminum CBR900RR (same all years according to Ron Ayers). As the two seemed reasonably similar on pics, my goal was to see if I work the RR unit and get it to fit (losing a few pounds of weight, most of it high up and back). Well, my tools and access to tools being about as limited as it gets (have basic hands tools only, in a rented garage), I soon realized that whatever changes were necessary were out of my grasp.

So, to make a long story short, who here would possibly be interested to see if we can organize/fab a run of said aluminum subframes and fairing stays (the latter being less important). Either built it (them) from scratch or perhaps mod existing units (900RR rear sub is not that far off from what I can see). If I can be done for a reasonable fee (whatever that means to you), who would be in for such a project.

To start the ball rolling, any such sub for me would have to be strong enough to carry a passenger (not 320 lb Bertha, but a 150 lb passenger). Price range for me would be @ $400 (250 GBP) ...?????

Anyone interested? Let's hear from you.

cheers

P.S. Please respect the "raison d'etre" for this thread: naysayers kindly please just move on......

Hi there. I had a spondon Ali sub frame and fitted it. I, well a mate had to fit the battery tray and fit all
Other gubbings around that area. Then you'll need a suitable undertray. Then the exhaust holder mounts. Finally, the fairing holes must then line up too.

It's a bit of a nightmare to be honest. But if this is all considered the great, good on you.
No bike (yet).

Hi, Micky.
Yet again, you've been thinking about the same thing as me....spooky!

I was thinking about just using a complete back end from another bike; subframe, tail plastics, undertray et al.

If you can find another bike with similar mounting positions then almost anything could be made to fit; possibly a small adaptor plate would be needed like the ones available to adapt rearsets.

For instance the gsxr750 belonging to my mate, currently in my garage having a gearbox fault sorted has the correct spacing fro the top mount, but the lower mount on the gsxr is wider, by quite a bit.
But there's no reason it couldn't be "persuaded"...

The only other issue would be the angle that the tail sits at; you might end up with it looking a bit too streetfighter, or drooping too far.

But then I'm not a fan of the standard tail, TBH.

Something a little pointier would be nice.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

your face was a picture! 8O

well, ok it was only .28 of a second but might as well have been a mile lol!
great fun m8, most enjoyable! .... bring on the next rwyb meet

i'll be putting mine back to how it was before..... it runs better now and uses less fuel, but isnt as fast as it was.
and it showed!

main thing for those thinking of having a go... the launch is crucial, and regardless of the state of tune it is extremely difficult to get off the line fast on the storm and keep the wheel down!
also it appeared we both had the same grabbing issues caused only when the engine was mad hot....
