Repairing gelcoat?
Just finished fixing the crack in my lowers from when I went down last month and after cleaning them up, I've noticed some scratches in the gelcoat. It's gone through the colour and is showing the red plastic underneath. Do any of you lot know how to repair gelcoat? Dont fancy forking out 200 quid for new lowers cos the insurance money has all gone now and that would be coming out of my hard earned. Missus is jobless at the minute too which doesn't help, but the rest of the bike will be looking pristine and I don't like the idea of having scratches on the lowers.

simples. carbon wrap. job done.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

if they are OE fairing bits then they won't be gel coat, OE plastics are just that ABS plastic and are painted not gel coat, you genrally only find gel coat on kit cars and boats, even GRP race fairings are white gel coat then painted to suit,
If they are OE parts then just paint as normal, flat off , prime, basecoat then clear job done.

They're the powerbronze lowers and are definitely gelcoat. Had a look at those videos and I'm tempted to give it a bash myself if I can find the right kit for the right price. Cheers peeps

I've rubbed down Powerbronze lowers before and brought the sheen back up with fine wet n dry followed by T cut then polish. Try a small area first with polish to see if will work on yours, you may be surprised.tinysmall wrote:They're the powerbronze lowers and are definitely gelcoat. yes the powerbronze stuff is GRP so finish will be gel coat, and I think having a go with wet n dry then cutting compound would be the way to go in the first instance, although I’d try something like G3 rather than T-cut, gel coat is quite thick so you could get pretty aggressive with it before you do any great damage, afterall what have you got to lose?
If the gel coat is compromised beyond saving I think you have to strip it off, not had any experience of this myself but I’ve seen someone stripping it off a kit car and it looks a proper horrible job, I assume there’s some reason you can’t just leave it on fill the scratches and paint it with 2K, I can’t see way that wouldn’t work.

That's what I did with my undertray, just keyed it well, primer/filler - boomb, job done!

Just to clarify about my suggestion above, the Powerbronze lower fairing I was referring too was not made of fiberglass (GRP) so doesn't have a gel coat.budd wrote:yes the powerbronze stuff is GRP,
