Oh Fudging Hell, not another tyre question

Post by stormingjoe »

Took the beast for MOT, passed  , went to take some stuff to missus's work, even after 6 very wet miles, found anything over 4,000 revs and the rear spins up  , running a BT023, which has been fine in the wet till I rejetted  , got a Dunslip RR on front and that seems OK if a little sharp.
As this now used more as my track and fun bike who can recommend a good wet tyre, might fit up a spare set of wheels just for this as well, will need to be road legal and last more than 500 miles 8O !!

Cheers

If you're spinning up an 023 in the wet - you need to have a look at your riding style. I've always found them very surefooted - and far better than the sports tyres like 016's which just never get warm enough.

You really should think about matching your tyres too - the combination you have is a recipe for disaster IMHO...

Be safe fella...

I have BT21 on front and rear on my storm. (think theys 21's) and when I go to change I'll be getting the 23's. Fitted them to the old Gixxer and they were great. Including a 400 mile run to cornwall and back. Plenty of grip even over the autumn rains last year.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

Just had Dunlop qualifiers fitted front and back on my storm. They are very nice and fall/roll into corners lovely. In the wet today, they seem just fine to me. They were relatively cheap too.

Don't blame ya mate - I always had Bridgestone Sports tyres on the ZXR/7R (010's, and 014's) - loved 'em, really grippy...

When the Conti's on 'Stormy were shagged - the 023's seemed the way to go. They're wearing really well considering the thrash to Tamworth and back...

Well, this is my fifth set of 023 on the storm, had this problem when I had 021s on my CBR but first time on the Storm( the Dunlop front is a recent addition and have no problem with this), have found as they are near end of life they go hard, this happens, traction loss, in 3/4 th gear and not at full chat either. Have looked at tyre and got a distinct step up from edge to the centre of the tread ( to many corners!!) might try a Dunlop rear or might go Metz, have to see prices and look into wear rates, want to get away from sport tourer Tyres on the storm, hence enquiry on better wet tyre more sport orientated, rather than a dig at my riding style!

I got a bit peeved at the rate of tyres and money I was getting through. I had a set of Maxxis Supersprts fitted. Can't tell the difference between them and the Sportecs I had. Actually I can, the Maxxis don't follow lines and ridges as much as the Sportec's did. More grip than I'll ever need!

i can vouch for these. have them on my storm atm there brillian tyres and were(might still be) the stock tyre for the supersport 600 in the states.

i have done 6k miles on mine and the rear probs has a few hundred more miles in it yet.

fantastic tyre!! good in wet once warm cheaper to the 2CT's which are not really that much better.

Trouble is, that's a comparison between the old set (which will track lines and ridges- because the tread's worn) and a brand new set.

Whenever I change tyres they always feel plush and amazing after being run in, because you're comparing them against worn ones.

Sidewall wear with miles also plays a part, as does flat spotting, leaving the bike for weeks in one position, etc, etc.

Ideally you compare tyres like the magazines do, several new sets fitted same day, same bike, same suspension settings, same track conditions, then you can get a real comparison, one against another in similar states of wear.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I agree totally with BarryH... I have the Maxxis Diamonds on my storm and can't complain in the slightest. The Diamonds are the ones with the very strange 'stippling' on the edge of the tread to aid wet weather traction (or so I believe), and so there will be no 'chicken strip' contest for me.
