Stator Cover and Oil Flow

Post by auromed »

I must admit that I dont actually have an VTR1000, but came across an engine off a wrecked bike pretty cheap and have thrown it on my dune buggy. I am still in the process of building everything, but have a question about the stator area.

I took the stator cover off because it was cracked and I need a new one, but when I cranked the engine up to test my new exhaust I noticed that without the cover on, some oil was blowing out of the area around the stator. Is this normal? I figured maybe the pressure with the cover on may keep most of the oil out, maybe it was supposed to get some oil or, do I need to change some seals?

the alternator cover on the left?

if so then yes oil will come out if it's off, it's not a 2 stroke engine where the alternator is dry and the crank area is sealed off.
