Hiya folks.
Can anyone offer me any advice?
I have just fitted a '98 fireblade front end to my 'storm and have just put my brake calipers back on and the inside of the caliper body is almost touching the disc. This is obviously due to the larger wheel spacers from the 'blade pushing the calipers further out.
How can I sort it safely (they are me brakes afterall).
Will a couple of washers between the caliper and fork leg be OK?
Any suggestions?
Cheers.
Andy
Hi Slim,
are the spacers (on the axle i take it) puhing the fork legs slightly apart? If they are sort that first. If not shove a washer in. you're only talking a couple of mill right? Not out on stalks or somthing silly? the bolts and fork lowers are strong enough to handle a washer or two
the caliper needs to be about 4mm nearer to the wheel, but I am not sure it will still clear the wheel as it looks pretty near with the caliper touching the inside of the brake disc
Is it just the one caliper or both?
Try taking the wheel out and measure the gap betwen the bottom of the fork legs.
Then replace the wheel and spacers and re-measure.
If the two are not the same you may have the wrong spacers
VTRSteve had a set already on his bike which had washers under the calipers.
It wasn't til he stripped the forks that he found out one of the legs was bent!!!
I have put a 2mm washer on each caliper bolt between the caliper and the inside of the fork leg. This seems to have done the trick. The clearance between the calipers and the discs looks the same on both sides.
I stripped the forks to put new seals in them end the stantions are ok I think. They were both moving smoothly after re-assembly
As far as the spacers are concerned, the breaker assured me they were right and I waited whilst he took the forks etc off the bike.
I am hoping the washer thing will be ok when I finally get it finished.
Just waiting for a new mudguard.........
there is a difference of about 8mm between the fork legs when the wheel is in and bolted up.
Is this too much.
I have phoned a Honda dealer who says there should be no gap at all and the spacers should be a tight fit between the fork legs.
There is also no way of telling how big the spacers should be without measuring ones off someone elses bike as Honda dont supply them with that info!
HELP!!!!!!
Your Honda dealer speaks the truth. When I put my wheel into the forks there is less than 1mm clearance TOTAL.
Sounds like you have the wrong spacers mate, I'll try and pop out to the garage tomorrow with a ruler.
As I understand it you need the spacers from a pre '98 blade
Ben you are a Gent!
Went back to the breakers where I brought the front and and he gave me half a dozen blade spacers to try, but he did not know which ones were which.
Some are bigger, some are smaller, but I dont want to try them randomly and get the wheel out of alignment.
The other option I guess, is to get the spacers new, but again I dont want to shell out £30 and find they need to be of an earlier blade.
It would be usefull if you could be arsed to measure them.
Cheers
Andy.
Ben you are a diamond geezer.
I can now get on with sourcing them
I am sure my spacers are smaller than that, but I am on bloody nights so it will have to wait til next week.
Thanks alot mate
Andy
