Cct's done!!!!

Just been with Budd.

Me and Budd did the cct's and balanced the carbs, leaving a new take off pipe all ready for the next time

Fitted under tray prior to painting

Took all day though :wtf:

At the end you can look back and realise how easy it is

However, when you are doing it, it just takes some time to work out a few thing that a lot of people would take for granted

Well done to you lot for providing all the info and answers

Also a big thank you to Budd............that bacon, egg and mushroom bap was the best m8

And a big thanks for your help and hospitality, now we need to sort out your forks and I can do mine at the same time :thumbup:

What did you use to blank off the 2 pipes. I used golf tees and the cable ties help keep it tidy & functional.

Budd had some 5mm bolts that have smooth shafts before the thread starts, he cut the thread off and they fit like a dream

Yes it was an interesting day, as you say looking back on the cct job it now seems so simple, but in the middle of doing it when the instructions talked of ‘locking’ the oe tensioners I have to admit to been confused and still don’t understand the reasoning or how it could be done, in the end we didn’t bother and just removed them and it was fine , but it's a concern whenever you deviate from set instructions particularly when dealing with the valve train because you know that any mistakes here could lead to a catastrophic failure and a large repair bill. So when the starter was flicked there was genuine concern and I have to say I was relieved to hear it purring away when we’d done.

The carb balancing was very simple and the gauge work faultlessly, both bikes needed minor tweaking and the carbs should now be synchronized perfectly.

And phil don’t give on the hugger, when you left yesterday I had a fiddle with it on mine and it does fit, you need to re-use the OE chain guard the hugger goes under it it will take a little fettling but I think it will fit spot on. I’ll try to post a pic up later.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone :cry: .

Hi Budd, if you are referring to number 10 of my instructions on "how to remove and refit CCT's on the Firestorm" then I'll explain. As you found out it's not absolutely necessary, but by not locking them off as you undo the two CCT retaining bolts, providing the spring is still good you've got constant pressure on those two bolts while you undoing them as the plunger keeps expanding. I just find it easier if it's locked off that was all. Haynes manual recommend retracting the plunger fully before removal, this is putting extra unnecessary strain on the CCT spring which you don't want if you intend to reuse them again, as it will only shorten their lives, something you're trying to avoid. So that's why I say retract the plunger two turns only.

was chatting to a girl on fb the other day - her & him both have storms....
i asked if she'd done the tensioners yet....

reply was - front one failed last week, bent valves. :roll:
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

My best m8's GF one has also failed. I had kept on warning him to have them changed at least for the past 2 months :( :(

Hi Chris
The instructions are great (the fact we managed to do it with no prior experience confirms this) and it wasn’t a criticism but simply because we hadn’t done this job before we were hyper cautious and because I know what damage valve to piston contact causes we were trying to follow the instructions to the letter, hence my slight confusion re locking off the tensioner I understand now why this would be necessary in some circumstances but not essential when fitting manual tensioners. All in all an excellent guide without which we would have been able to do the job , many thanks.

Phil re the hugger, I've been messing with it again today and encountered a couple of issues firstly it’s touching the tyre, whether this is because my race spec Diablo super corsas are slightly bigger in profile than more road orientated tyres I don’t know but even if this is the cause it will be mighty close, secondly it needs some method of connecting it to the OE chain guard, maybe a self tapper will suffice or perhaps some sikafex adhesive sealant would be better, either way it’s going to take a fair bit of trial and error to get it anything like, it may even need some serious trimming just to clear the tyre, let me know what you want me to do with it, maybe it would be better to simply buy a new one, if you got a black one it would even need painting.

Budd, Yeah valves coming into contact with pistons don't work do they :wink: I didn't think it was a criticism, but just thought I'd explain :) I know what you are saying though when following a guide, when things don't go exactly as it reads you think you've missed something important.
