The front brakes on my 99 Storm are making a rattling noise when applied.
Any idea what the problem could be?
The brakes seem to work fine but the noise is a bit worrying.
Haydn.
Thats probably just the rotors moving on their mounting buttons.
Tis perfectly normal with these new fangled floating disks, some are louder than others. Has it got standard disks or have replacements been fitted at some time?
Ben,
Thanks for your reply.
It has had EBC disks fitted fairly recently - prior to me buying it last week.
Thing is I don't recall hearing this noise when I test rode it. Is there anything that can be done to quiten it down or do I just put up with the noise?
Haydn
Who put the disks on? Did you have it from a shop or privately?
If it was from a shop, throw it back at them and get them to fix it.
Otherwise, I think your best bet is to take the disks off and make sure the buttons are tight. I'm not certain on this pointbut I think that to mount the disks on the buttons you put an anvil under them and hit the other side with a hammer. If they've not been hit hard enough the button could still be slightly loose
I bought the bike privately so no come back there.
I'm a bit nervous about hammering hell out of the disks.
Anyone know a method for checking if the disks are correctly fitted?
Haydn.
The discs are *supposed* to move a little, that's why they're called floating discs. I wouldn't recommend hitting them with a hammer. They should quieten down when they get hot as the disc expands, but if the noise still bothers you, buy some earplugs ;)

Sorry mate, didn't make myself clear.
Its the buttons you want to hit with the hammer, not the disks.
The buttons press together, one from each side and if they're not tight enough together you'll get too much movement
