FAO Wicky RE wind noise / flip screen

Post by jono49 »

I had my first decent run out on my STORM yesterday  got used to it fairly quickly and found it a lot more nimble than my Blackbird and on the whole enjoyed the experience apart from one thing!!!!.......... Fookin Wind noise :eek2 Jeez it was bad! quite a windy day but the standard screen offered no protection at all. i tried all positions behind and above the screen and none of which worked, I have a SHARK helmet and regard it as quite Quiet! But i was near demented by the noise. The first thing i did last night was look through the forum on the subject and seen "Wicky's" reply to someone with the same problem and a link to the M&P page to their "Flip Screen" I'm about 5'10" would this be enough to raise the wind to say the top of the helmet? and hopefully a bit more noise free?

I had the same problem being 6ft7. I tend to get battered on any bike with a standard screen so I was not put off. Got an MRA flip up screen to replace it.

Has made a huge difference. Has made the bike quite a pleasant touring machine.

I got the screen initially not to cut down noise but to counter buffeting (I'm 5' 10" also) at 80+mph though with the addition of using silicone earplugs I don't have a problem with noise (even with open cans ;-)

In terms of cost v benefit: You could start with earplugs if noise is a problem (do you have noisy pipes?), then try the flip screen, then lastly upgrade your lid.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I should have explained i do wear Earplugs E.A.R. (the Yellow ones) I did experience severe buffeting at progressive speeds and hence the wind noise that comes with it so for the price I think I'll give the screen a Go and see if helps? It's been a long time since i experienced being exposed like that as my BIRD had a Bubble on it and kept me well protected! as for the cans, they are standard but could hardly hear them for the wind noise...........One screen being ordered

start by making sure your visor is fitted properly.

on one of my shoei lids, with a aftermarket visor it is almost totally silent (with plugs) at high speed, but with an oem visor it was awfull, the wind noise was terrible & it let wind in which made my eyes water.
after a bit of fiddling i got it to seal a lot better and it made a massive improvement.

regarding the buffeting.... on my storm i have a fabbri screen which if you look at the others on the market, it's like a triple bubble.... it's quite a bit higher than say an airblade (and thicker)
i find that even when sat up there is hardly any wind buffeting up to 120 - 130+
with a standard screen it's noticeable at over 80!

they are a few £ dearer than others but worth every penny imo. ill defo be fitting one to the sp shortly.

Hello and on the subject of earplugs

I would recommend going online or to a workwear shop

Moldex Pura-fit are really good

http://www.moldex.com/hearing-protectio ... ra-fit.php

I use them all the time and you can tailor the amount of noise by altering the amount you push them in

At 130 all is pretty much silent

I have a standard screen and remus high levels and 5' 8" tall

And at 10p a pair you can use a new pair each time

Well recommended
