strange cold starting problem
strange cold starting problem
up until a few weeks my storm started from cold instantly ,no problems for over a year but now it struggles to turn and start from cold .
how ever from hot it will start first thing over and over again no probs at all
New battery in 14.3 volts going into it with lights off ,
so i am stumped not sure whats going on , could be the starter connection but it start fine when hot , it like the starter is having a hard time with a cold engine .
any idea,s

Re: strange cold starting problem
changed the oil recently?
When subjected to an electrical voltage of at least 50 volts, a cat's tail always points toward the north.
Re: strange cold starting problem
yes how did you guess
Re: strange cold starting problem
Over filling ?
Re: strange cold starting problem
just because the bat shows 14 v dont mean it has the cranking power under load. measure the volts while trying to start , see how far it drop.
Re: strange cold starting problem
yes already done that its fine when cranking problem only started after changing the oil strange
Re: strange cold starting problem
Neil, before you go taking the new oil out and putting back the old have you tried disconnecting the battery once you put the bike away for the night, then reconnecting it in the morning It could be something on the bike is draining the battery down slightly over night.

Re: strange cold starting problem
Well eliminated overfilling of oil going to have a look as the starter now , This is driving me crazy
Re: strange cold starting problem
Check the starter lead where it bolts onto the starter motor under the rubber boot. If it's corroded then that cause starting probs.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Mine has done this since I got it, came to the conclusion that they just don't like the cold.I fitted
a ciggy lighter to the battery and bought a booster (black n decker) that I keep charged. If you can't
beat it surrender.

Re: strange cold starting problem
There isw a knack to starting these from cold which has been documented before. Get it wrong and you flood the engine. Try a couple of cranks with no choke at all then slowly pull the choke out as you hit the starter button again till she fires.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!
Re: strange cold starting problem
Never had a problem except from when the old batt was nakerd,
It was fine starting at home in the warm garage, then trying to start it at work at 3-4am in sub zero's it didn't have the umph left in it to crank it, would have to bump it down a ramp, A change off batt solved it for that.

Re: strange cold starting problem
Gawd I miss my storm.
Ride enough winters and you'll get the cold starts down to a fine art
Pete.l
Thick oil, cold batteries, crudded conectors, when it gets really bad just leave the charger attached and hit the start button
