Ducafe seat project

Post by Flatline »

So I now have a fibreglass kit

Going to make my own seat unit

Ordered some florist foam blocks to make a blank with

Will post pictures here
Image

This is the kit. Notice it has some very nice brushes.

They are yellow, though not the VTR yellow we are so fond of

You can also see that the supplier gave me a box to carry them in. Isn't that nice of them

Careful with that stuff - worked as an artist in a company making rides and displays for theme parks, and there was one elderly guy who'd worked all his life with GRP and he looked the double of Davros. Not helped by also chain smoking while working with all the chemicals. I will always remember the sculptors armed with chainsaws attacking great big blocks of polystyrene to make forms of life-size elephants, Buddha statues and t-rexes etc. http://www.formulamouldings.co.uk/index ... 5&Itemid=7

Look forward to pics 'n' stuff showing work in progress.

I have tried doing some fiber glass stuff before and it's hard. Good luck matey.

Let me know if you find a good method for making stuff. For me, I found that I would lay the layers of glass fibre and then when I tried to put the resin on, the resin was too sticky and pulled the glass fibre apart. Ended up with a big mesh of crap rather than a neatly layered fibre glass structure like I wanted.

Use glass woven cloth not mat sheet as the mat will come apart when you put the resin on
I found carbon woven cloth to be the best to work with :)

Miztaziggy, did you cover the plug with resin first?

Then lay the mat on the wet resin so it sticks, and dab more resin over it

Finally roller it with a specially designed roller to remove air

Any good

Ah, the specially-designed roller comes into its own:

Seat Unit Update

Post by Flatline »

Image

I am using a piece of 18mm mdf as the base, and florist foam to create the shape (£13 for 10 blocks off ebay witht the 2.5ltr fibreglass kit at £25-30

It's possible to use expanding foam from a can and may be stronger that florist foam

Image

Once the base has been shaped the foam can be stuck on

I used a can of spray glue, however it takes too long to dry. There must be a better glue

Any suggestions for a quick dry glue?

Image

The florist foam is easy to cut with a bread knife.............

Image

.............and sanding is a doddle using 60 or 80 grade. Really nice material to work with

Image

Once the basic shape has been formed it's back on to the frame to have a look

It's much better to have the tank in place, however it's away at the powdercoaters

They have had a few setbacks so I don't have it at the moment

Image

Bit more sanding and shortening and back onto the frame

Image

You will notice on the sides that there is some foam missing

Once the final shape has been sorted, any holes and mistakes can be filled

Image

Will leave it at that and wait for the tank (hopefully Wednesday)

I can then create the final shape and begin the fibreglass process

Hope you find this interesting
