R1 tailed streetfighter project

Post by stormsmasher »

Well I finally got round to the R1 tail project after the best part of two years!
Sorted out the bottom mount and think I almost have the desired angle, just got to fabricate a new top mount before I make a start on the electrics and then make a new set of exhaust pipes.....watch this space!

What's the definition of a streetfighter? When they started out it was a crashed GSX-R/Exup that the owner couldn't afford to repair, so tore off the damaged fairings and put some dodgy lights on. Is there any specific description?
Anyway Rob stop writing on here and get back in the workshop making my Harris replicas (all for the cost of a box of shortbread if I remember the deal correctly!!)

no! no! no!

a streetfighter is a short forked, RIGID, dragstyled bike. flat bars, rearsets, bellypan, maybe a little bikini fairing. usually black, tons of bad attitude, looks like it's doing 200mph standing still. motor tuned to the max. built for the traffic light grand prix, a streetlegal(-ish) dragbike.
i know, i was there, in the mid/late 80's building them.... we built them by putting the new generation of japanese hyper-sportsbike engines, wheels and forks into modified old chop frames... steven myatt, the then editor of BSH magazine first coined the phrase in print, tho it's origin is often attributed to 'crazy 'odgie' of 'Anthill Customs'.
the crashed gixxer with crosser bars and a bates headlight came much later, and wern't called streetfighters at the time. and IMHO shouldn't be now.
i get a bit ranty on this subject, it's one of my pet peeves, how the name has been hijacked and b8stard by everything from a std bandit with renthals to a £30k unridable tarts handbag.
